View Full Version : ? MOULD REST for a Lee 10# pot ?

I was on Amazon a couple weeks back and accidentally ran across a tool called a 'Lab Jack'. They come in all sizes and heights of extension.
I thought to myself..."hmmm, what a handy shelf for a mould, easy to adjust...bla, bla, bla."
So I ordered a small one...

I have another project going at the moment so all I've done is set it under the spigot to see what I could see?

https://i.imgur.com/EQx3tQv.jpg

I was talking with a friend on TRN about having to make some kind of rail to index the side of the mould to...but after seeing how visible the spigot is on a 10# pot, I'm not sure I want to even go that route...I can see the 'X & Y' position of the sprue hole and the spigot easily.

When I get time to figure out a way to fasten the jack, I'll post again about that (gotta finish the PC oven controls first)...
Another PC oven surrenders to a PID ...

Just thought I would post this to see what others may think about a 'cheap-n-easy' mould rest for a Lee 10# pot? Any comments?

OS OK a couple questions please. Is the upper shelf aluminum or something else? Do you think it would hold up if used as a front rifle support off of a bench? Kevin

That's exactly the thought I had too, put a small sandbag (like an elbow bag) on top and your good to go.
This little 3.5" square jack (aluminum) I think may be too lightweight and won't extend high enough but there's every size jack & price range you can imagine.

I'm glad you like it, but it won't work for a lot of molds, including all NOE pin molds. I bought NOE's mold guide, and I don't like it one bit. I should probably sell it. The more I try things, the more I realize Lee's simple little tab is the best mold shelf out there.

cool little jack.
for the pin molds mabe a piece of flat stock put on the top of the jack with flathead screws? then fasten the whole thing down to the base of the pot in the correct position? maybe turn the jack sideways with the handle to the right or left and put some L clamps on the rails of the jack so you can ajust it side to side for differnt .molds.Just a few thoughts.

The guy selling those should send you a percentage. You probably boosted his sales by 3 or 400%.

I bought one. I have this weird slug mold that is in three pieces and you need to be very precise when filling it. I might also use it for my other molds...

OS OK, while your mold is sitting there, the aluminum jack stand is sucking the heat out of it. You might want to consider putting an insulating mat on it to slow the heat loss. Soldering blocks for jewelry makers come in a bunch of materials and prices. https://www.riogrande.com/category/tools-and-equipment/soldering-and-welding/soldering-accessories#q=soldering%20block&t=products&sort=relevancy&layout=card&numberOfResults=36&f:categoryfilter=[Tools%20%26%20Equipment,Soldering%20%26%20Welding, Soldering%20Accessories]

It's been a lot of years since I bought anything from them, but I do spend some time drooling over their selection of tools now and then...

I would not mind the $5 increase if they gave most of it to you! Good catch on the adjustable jack!

I don't think there is enough mass in that thin top to really pull the heat out in any appreciable amount. If anything it might let you pick up pace by a fraction of a second.

What I thought was good is that as you push the mould into place under the valve...any drips & spills just push ahead of the mould and off the back of the platform.

That sounds interesting. I have both a 10 lb and a 20 lb Lee bottom pour. I have been using a piece of lumber for a mould guide for the smaller one. It's pretty iffy but it has worked so far. I would like to do something better. The adjustable jack looks nice but I would like to fasten whatever I use down. Don't know how to do that with the jack any more than the wooden brace. I would like a little more information about your steel channel - how you designed it, whether it is fastened to the pot base, etc. Can you help a fella?

I'd think a couple short sections of self adhesive hook and loop (Velcro) would work for both your block of wood or the jack. All that's needed is to keep it from sliding around imo.

its just a piece of channel as long as the pot base is wide with a flat pieces steel at each end as legs .my pot is also stood on an old baking tray so the odd splash stays in the tray not all over my bench.

I should have known the ridged surface on the jack would not provide enough flat surface for the Velcro adhesive to bond to. So I cut a scrap piece of 1/8" aluminum plate to 4"X4" and attached it to the jack with a few dabs of fast set epoxy. The Velcro securely holds the jack in place while allowing quick removal.

to OS OK, you are a GENIUS!! thanks........

Don't know about OLEY but I was thinking that having that lab jack adjustable at it's base might allow me to run a mould like this by catching one side at the bottom edge?

A 1/8th in X 3/4in roll or solid pin and a set screw will replace those pesky screws.

I wish I could take credit for that Idea but I got it from someone on here. If I remembered who I would credit them with a great idea.
