Lyman 45

I picked up an old Lyman 45 and I think it might need a new "O" ring. When I put lube in the reservoir and try to push it down under pressure, the piece of all thread that the ratchet goes on just backs out of the reservoir.

I'm just guessing that it's the "O" ring, but am not sure. Maybe the 45 is toast Anybody know what to do? And if it is the "O" ring, is there any place to obtain one with out having to order from Lyman?

Sounds more like the threaded rod has pulled loose from the bottom.

454PB is right. There is a shoulder, or in your case, there was a shoulder on what you call the "all thread". The shoulder on the base end holds the thrust against the bottom side of the base. Mine pulled loose many years ago. It can be repaired by ordering (I don't know, but I'll be Lyman has them in stock), or a local machine shop could weld you a shoulder on it and turn it down to fit. Of course that will cost more than most folks think it should. I'd try to order one.

Google up Lyman and go to the parts. I think the whole repair kit will only cost around $15--$20. I upgraded my old 45's this last summer and I'm going by memery. Not good ha ha.

I think it's called a preasure screw or something like that.
I broke one in a 450. Broke the bottom right off.
Got a new one from Lyman. Back in business in about a week.
I think it cost around $13, plus shipping too.
I didn't think fixing was an option, it's a tapered steel to steel fit for the seal, no o ring.

I would get the following:

Replacement Parts 4500/450 - ( 2) Pressure Nut $3.00

Replacement Parts 4500/450 - ( 3) O-Ring (Each) $1.00 x2 = $2.00
Replacement Parts 4500/450 - ( 9) Pressure Screw $4.00

The pressure screw is a lot more robust than the original design. If you want to use the reservoir cover, you may have to enlarge the hole as the top of the screw is a little larger than the original. You can also get the O rings from most hardware stores.

I also recommend getting the new pressure nut as it allows for 2 O rings and does a better job.
