View Full Version : Ideal no 45

I picked up a no 45 lube sizer recently. Has all the parts except the thumb screw that holds the top punch in. Does anyone know what the thread size was for that piece ? As I'm dedicating this sizer to one size only I should be able to get away with a set screw instead if necessary. Any help is appreciated.

I sent you a PM ...BUT to be honest, some folks don't even use the thumbscrew, they just stick the top punch in the press using beeswax or something...I suppose it could also be glued in?

Lyman likes to use unique threaded screws, so it'll probably be tough to find a 10-36 screw locally? although I believe I did find some allen type set-screws in 10-36 at the local hardware store.

Since the nose punch usually needs to be changed to match the nose of the cast bullet, it would be impractical to glue them in place. A 10x 36 shouldn't be that hard to find. You could make one.

The set screw isn’t a bad idea especially if you want to set it up for a one size luber

Smear some lube on the nose punch shank and stick it in. It will not fall out and the slight wobble will help the bullet center in the die properly.

AT one time, Unified Extra Fine Threads were fairly common. The firearms industry used them as the 6-48 (UNEF) and 8-40 (UNEF) threads that appear today, that 10-36 may be a UNEF thread, but the 10-40 thread appears here and there also. The extra fine threads were used in very thin wall threading to gain a few extra threads, like in tapped holes in barrels and receivers, it was/is believed finer threads also resistant vibration better than coarse threads, but that concern ended with thread locking compounds. Check Victor Machinery, www.-victornet.com as they carry a large assortment of screws, taps, and dies for many 'non-standard' threads.

I have the set screw in my old 45 for the top punch....haven't tightened it in decades.
