I was loading some 38 spl and came across some Herters brass that the primer didn't want to seat in. The Herters brass primer pockets measured .0015 to .002 smaller (.172 - .1715).
Is this normal?

This is what I use for these issues.

I’ve heard that S&B produces a lot of ammo for Herters. Anyone who has deprimed S&B brass using a LEE decapping punch will understand. Not saying S&B primers are crimped in but they sure take some effort to punch out. That might be the problem.

Thanks slim, If I run into very many more I might pick one of those up.
With the stash of 38 brass I have it's not big deal.
I was just wondering if it's common because according to the information I have they are out of tolerance.

Occasionally I’ve come across some .38sp that has crimped primer pockets, can’t say what brand they were. If so just ream them a bit with a shell case reamer such as the one made by RCBS.

Lyman makes a primer pocket uniformer that is not as expensive as the RCBS but doesn't mount on the press, either. Just a couple of twists does the job. I routinely use it whenever I come across S&B brass. One time does the trick.

Cabela's/Bass Pro Shops has sourced their Herter's brand ammunition from several different manufacturers, including Sellior & Bellot and Winchester. You've probably encountered some of the S&B brass, which tends to have slightly tighter primer pockets, plus squared off lips for the primer pocket, rather than rounded like most of the domestic brands.

There is currently a recall for some of the Herter's 9mm ammunition which was loaded by Winchester. They also loaded the same 9mm under Browning and a couple of other brand names, including their own.

Hope this helps.

S&B 45 ACP that I've tried to reload has a similar issue. When I find it now I leave it on the range.

When in doubt, call it "metric." That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I pick it all up and sort it later. The way things are going, I foresee serious brass shortages in the future.

Our range used to be literally carpeted with discarded brass. It's slim pickin's now. Even oddball brass may be useful some day.

I'll probably kick myself for leaving all that .22LR laying about.
