View Full Version : TC Renegade/Hawken Replacement Barrels

Hello everyone. I am currently trying to find a source for a Green Mountain replacement barrel for my 1970's TC Renegade. Track of the wolf is out of stock, but I know there are other vendors out there but I just don't recall who they are. The original factory barrel has never shot satisfactory for me. A new barrel is a lot cheaper than a brand new custom build Hawken with the proper twist, which about 1:28 is what I'm after.

Thanks.

They come up from time to time on the American Long Rifles forum. Used is probably your best bet, or you could contact Robert Hoyt and have him rebore a barrel for you.

That was a consideration, was just hoping to get a new one.

Thought about this as well. I don't know... it sure does seem like new rifle time anyways. 8-)

So far.
All the barrels Hoyt has done for me are great.
I had one bored and re- rifled to a larger caliber.
And two others bored and lined back to their original caliber.
But I did go with a RB twist on all three.

Do you know how to get a hold of Mr. Hoyt?

I just put in for a Kiblers Colonial Rifle kit, but I'm still going to get this old TC Renegade shooting right. It's too neat of a gun.

There is a post in the muzzleloader thread that gives Hoyts number and I think address.
I think it asked for name and number and I think it is page 2 of the muzzleloader thread

A liner by Bob Hoyt as suggested is the only economical way I am aware of. I've never had one done by him, but everyone likes him. I forget the price quoted last year, but it was very reasonable.

For a drop in barrel, the prices good TC and Green Mountain barrels are going for is ludicrous. It would make sense to buy from TOTW at nearly $300, but they have not been in stock in a couple years at least. Instead, it's far easier to assemble one. TOTW has all the parts, breech plugs, underlug rail, ramrod pipes, sights, etc. They will even do the machine work for you. I seem to recall I could get a ready made, in-the-white, barrel for something like $375, about what the used Green Mountains are going for on fleabay and gunbroker. All you have to do is find a 15/16" straight octagon barrel in the caliber and twist you want. A 50 cal 1:28" should be easy enough to find. Rice lists "fast twist" 15/16" barrels in 45 and 50 caliber, but doesn't list what the exact twist is.

I have two new T/C Hawken barrels in 50 cal, 15/16" across the flats. Problem is one has a flint breach and the other is an Italian replacement with a left hand breach plug. Both have sights, under rib and thimbles. will sell one or both.

Mr. Hoyt has done a couple of rebores for me and one reline. I'd go back to him in a NY minute. Nice guy.

My understanding is that Green Mountain has long since discontinued production of their drop-in replacement barrels for the TC muzzleloaders, because there is simply no demand for them. These days when you say 'muzzleloader,' everyone assumes that you mean a synthetic stocked, inline scoped rifle in .50 (only), shooting a saboted jacketed bullet with pellets of a BP substitute for the propellant. I've long since adopted the term 'traditional side-lock muzzleloader' when referring to my guns.

Ask the local gunsmiths if they will rebore the existing barrel.

I bought a new TC barrel right before they stopped making them. Poor thing would never group no matter what I tried. I sent it off to be re-bored by Mr Hoyt. Now its a tack driver! Worth every penny.

I bought a Green Mountain barrel for my T/C Hawken 32" long, 66 twist this past spring, I think, from Track so they were making them then. I paid around $250 seems like.

This thread is making me pretty sad. I pulled my old TC Hawkin out the other day and the barrel has rusted pretty badly for about two or three inches from the muzzle back. I cleaned with soapy water, dried, and oiled before storage -- am at a loss at to why this happened. I guess I went way too long before maintenance.

Anyhow, I've always wanted to get a fifty or larger barrel for it, but now I find that they're no longer made?? jd

I may have a .50 or .45 Green Mountain fast twist barrel I could sell. I know I have a stock .50 Renegade barrel in excellent condition.

Contacted Mr. Hoyt today. Very nice guy, and his prices on a rebore to 54 cal are exceptionally fair. I figured I would go ahead and step it up in size and stay with a PRB twist. I did some digging for all options but nothing really exists anymore, so this is the best way to go.

Thanks again everyone.

It was only a couple of weeks if I remember.
But give him a call , and see how busy he is.
Mr. Hoyt is very good to work with.
A little hard to reach , but he does get back to you in a reasonable time frame.
I should call him , I have two barrels that I need to send him , and two others that I might just have Refreshed.

He told me if I sent the barrel in this week, which I didn't get around to it, for a complete rebore from 50 to 54, I'd have it back by mid November. He used the words "snowed in", but he was a very nice guy. I wouldn't hesitate to do business with him based on his reputation and the time he spent with me on the phone.

I'd really enjoy having a New Englander turned into a modern incarnation of a 19th Century .46 caliber target rifle. But then I'd be wanting to give it a full length stock...

Forgot to mention. I ended up sending him my barrel to get it bored out to 58, and it was back inside of a month. I haven't shot it yet as the rifle is under complete rebuild/restoration but I can tell you, it's very nice work.

Rice barrel Co. also makes Drop-in replacements for TC. However, there is about a 3 - 4 month lead time if not in stock. Call and talk to Jason.

Also Oregon Barrel Co. has them on their website.

Thought I'd sing some praises for Bobby Hoyt's work. I finally got to shoot the rifle today, and it took some load development, but 90grs of Olde Eynsford 2F with a .570 round ball and a .018 pillow ticking patch yielded pretty much 1 ragged hole at 50 yards for 5 shots. I'll have to do some final zeroing and get the gun out to 100 yards, but as far as his rebore work? Do not hesitate. This rifle wouldn't even hit paper with a PRB as a shallow rifled 1:42 50 cal.

I knew you would be happy with the Hoyt work on your barrels.
I am waiting for two barrels that are being Relined right now.
I got to get my next two in the mail that I am going to just have them Refreshed.
I have never shot a refreshed barrel , but from the description , I believe the rifling will be deeper and still in the 1:48 twist.
That should make them shoot better than the shallow groove factory rifling.

He definitely does good work. In fact, I'm having a 58 caliber SMR built right now and we are probably going to go with a barrel produced by Mr. Hoyt. You are right, the grooves are much deeper. Before you couldn't even see them.

I have had two Relined already.
A TC 50 and a 54.
The one that impressed me most was a .56SB that I had him bore out to .61.
That rifling is very Deep and slow twist.
It shoots very well at 100 yards.
That Renegade will be my Elk Rifle if I ever get drawn for a tag.

I hope I'll hunt with this one a little bit this year, considering how well it shoots. I'm just a flintlock guy thru and thru and really enjoy hunting with the flinters.

For a little posterity. I'm cheap and do load development and initial sighting in on the same target sometimes. 90gr of 2F gave me that nice 5 shot cluster around the bullseye.

Very nice. Where was this 30+ years ago when I could see the sights. I have two Hawkens and they are my favorite guns to shoot. But, I'm one of those purist that refused to put a scope on a Hawken, and bought a more modern fast twist side lock and put a red dot on it. It's a meat plow.

I think if you want a 1:28, you may not want a very large bore unless cape buff are on the agenda. :) most of the existing barrels that will fit the Renegade are minimum 50 cal so a rebore is going to put you in 54 territory. If your shoulder will tolerate that, then Hoyt is the guy.

Oregon barrel will rifle and build a drop in to order.
