Stopped by the local GS today to try and pick up a pound of Clays. Wouldn't you know, they were out of it. Cruised the handgun counters, like always. What do I see, a 4 5/8" BH in .45colt/.45acp. Yep, the conversion gun. Price tag-$399......

That's only bad luck if you didn't buy it.

Well, did ya?

No. I'm poor.:( I've got a US Model 1917 that I don't want, but I don't think they'll give me enough in trade to get the deal done.

Yeah, it would be much more considerate if they wouldn't sell guns at componant stores, wouldn't it?:roll::roll::roll::roll:

I've never owned or even shot a .45 colt but that will be my next gun purchase.

I have an old model BH with both cylinders, 4 5/8" blue. Great revolver. No......not for sale. Hope you can manage a swap for the one you saw.

j200wner,
Keep saving, you'll get there. My 45 Colt Blackhawk is 8 days old today, 5.5 in barrel, Well worth the wait. I diddn't get the convertable. Heard they had accuricy problems. May have a cyl cut for 45 acp and might not. I have 2 1911's if I really want to shoot the 45acp. Jetwrench

Don't start shooting 45 Colt. You won't be able to quit. :Fire:

I finally got one last year. Saw too good a deal on a 5 1/2" SS Old Model Vaquero to pass up. Thought I'd have a little fun with it then see what I could deal for with in trade or sale.

Well, that's what I thought I was gonna do. I'm hooked. Got myself about to buy a holster for it to wear around the place and in the field.

It's not going anywhere soon. It's as much fun reloading for it as it is shooting it.

There's a wide range of possiblities at the reloading bench. 200gr poppers to 315gr whoppers (here piggy piggy) and all sorts of fun inbetween at 240gr and 255 gr.

Now if I could just spot as good a deal on a short barreled 45C with a bird's head grip.

The accuracy problems are that the acp round frequently out shoots the Colt. I had my cylinders reamed to fix that but the accuracy of the acp cylinder has always been great. Ruger does cut them to minimum chambers and what my Kimber feeds won't always fit in the Ruger.

If I had to limit my battery of handguns to only a two or three, my SS Ruger Vaquero 45 Colt 5 1/2 incher would be one of those. This gun is just too much fun, and it is very practical and versitile. My latest venture with it is shooting Pyrodex under some Lee 230 gr TC's. I love that big cloud of smoke, and it shoots pretty good too! Like be603 says, don't start shooting one of these, unless you want a new addiction!

Well, you could always talk yourself out of it by trying to convince yourself that the reason it's in that shop is someone dumped it off because the cylinder throats were much much smaller than the bore & it would lead like a sonuva gun.

But I'm betting it locked like a bank vault!!:kidding:

The gun you don't want- Is that a '17 Revolver, S+W or Colt, or a '17 Enfield 30-06? Any of them in good shape and original should bring the BH into the near even up trade area, at least around here they would.

MtGun44

I think Bret is right about trading value. If it is a 1917 US Enfield rifle, I'd offer
a straight across and let them drag me up to $25 to boot - maximum, assuming
the M1917 is good shape and not sporterized.

Measure the cyl throats (see sticky on revolver accuracy) as my .45 BH conv
(and others report many more) had extremely tight throats. I reamed them up
to .452 and polished to .453 and it is now much better with cast. My bbl was
.452, throats were .449 and .450 IIRC, but too tight for a .452 groove bbl.

There is an old post of my simple reaming setup and info on it in the
gunsmithing section, if you buy it and get interested trying it. There are
gunsmiths that specialize in this treatment, too.

Good luck.

Is the 1917 a S&W? If so I might be interested. Drop me a PM !

I guess I should have specified. It's a 1917 rifle, Eddystone. Here's a pic:

It did lock up tight. It was super clean and didn't have any residue on the front of the cylinder or the 'ring' around the cylinder. Also, I'd rather have super tight throats than too big throats. They make reamers.;)

How much you want for that thar 1917? what condition is the bore in?

j20owner

Bore looks good. I'm pretty sure it's 4 groove, so supposedly it's original to the gun.

I'd probably be happy enough to get $400 to get this pistol! I'd really hate to have to try and ship it, though. It's at my folks' house right now, stowed away in the safe.

..................Yeah I've had luck like that. Then I think, "Will I see a deal like that again", "How have I lived so long without that", "God, I gotta have it".

Gotten my personal hinnie in deep heat a few times, but what's the saying, "It's easier to seek forgiveness then permission"? So far my 2 times of trying to be grownup and mature about these things left me all wrung out and lifeless after they were sold before my Maturity Deadline was up!

One was a M92 clone in 45 Colt that had a half octagon/round 24" bbl, color cased action and other metalwork. It was in on consignment for $300 and looked enough like brand new to have passed for it. It was a Friday and I said I'll call Monday and if it's there I'll go buy it. Some low life ner do well slinthered in and bought MY rifle!

The US 1917 will have the barrel date near the front sight to see if it is
original. By the way, I'm in Lenexa is the pistol at Denny's or BH? Not
going to mess with it, just wondering if we freqent the same stores.

You're very right, and the don't make "unreamers" ! At least, not in
any size I ever needed. ;-)

j20owner

Yeah, the barrel date is only about half there.

The pistol is at Denny's/Snapshots/whatever they're calling it these days.

Honestly if I was going to buy one I would PREFER one like that, small I can fix, large I cannot :-).

Fine-looking rifle, J20. I'm sure there's some room to negotiate a fair swap in your favor for that Ruger roller.

I have personally witnessed Buckshot during times of Ambivalent Maturity as he describes herein. Not a thing for the faint of heart to observe.
