Now that the 450 has been out for a while and a number of people are casting for it thought it might be interesting to revisit.

We've had some great threads and not looking to reinvent the wheel but have an application specific idea/question-

Bolt action rifle with 1:16 barrel. Looking at using a mould similar to this:

COWW, gas checked and powder coated, probably the shake and bake method.

Hoping to load this to +/- 2200fps for deer etc.

Obviously no way to know if a certain rifle will like a certain boolit but that caveat aside is this in general a sound concept?

So what is the advantage of it over something similar?

Advantage of which- the 450, that mould, powdercoating?

The PC will allow a relatively soft (e.g., 30-1) bullet to function at very high velocities.
I have no problem seeing Lyman #2 (PC'd ... or better ALOX'd) at 2,200.
Try it, then soften the bullet up in stages (try wheel weight)

Thanks, that's kind of what I'm hoping for.

I'm looking for a mold that will feed thru an AR. The heavier the better, maybe 350grs??? Any suggestions??

Not trying to be critical! But why the overkill in velocity. I have taken 3 deer in the last 2 years with the 450 all 3 were with 300ish gr. cast PC bullets in the 1300fps area. 2 were heart shots that went 50 Yards and 1 was a front shoulder hit that was DRT. All were within 50 yards -
My alloy is 50CO/50soft + 1% pewter PC no check + not heat treated.
I am a woose, and am very recoil shy. so even my 405 gr. Lee bullets are under 1100 fps

I use this mold in an AR with complete satisfaction, Powder Coated or lubed.
It feeds flawlessly and is plenty accurate.
NOE offers a 304 grain with similar nose profile, so feeding should be fine in an AR when seated to the same COAL.

Velocity is a fairly arbitrary number taken from the fact that Hornady's 250gr ftx ammo lists at 2200fps and is comfortable to shoot.

I would prefer the terminal performance of cast lead, the gas check and powder coating is half a necessity and half an interesting project.

Hoping the boolit profile in the first post delivered accurately from a mv of appr 2200fps would be a relatively flat shooter and hard hitter at reasonable distances.

Some people want a flatter shooting load than you use. Why download a .450 when you can shoot a .44 mag? Different needs for different folks.
