Looking at 3 or 4 16oz cans at a good price but I don't use it and never have. I can read the reloading manuals but am interested in those who like it and what for. Will it do anything other powder won't?

12 ounce cans? I thought all of mine is in one pound cans. 15 to 16 grains in a 30-30 with bullets 170 grain and up work very well if they are going to work at all. Since SR4759 has been discontinued it is an excellent substitute. Known as a magnum handgun powder also but I haven't used it there. Should be great in the 45-70. Wonderful and versatile powder.

You cannot load something with a gunpowder you do not have. If you need powder get it! It's versatile and meters well in the perfect powder measure. It is a fast rifle powder that has applications in 38 Special.

If you got an idea of what direction you wanted to go in...

9.5gns of 4227 and a powder coated 80gn boolit in my 25/20 is very accurate! over 700 loads in a can!

I think there are loads for 4227 in all the large volume straight wall pistol cases. I use it in 460 S&W.

I don't consider 4227 as fast burning handgun powder, red dot is fast burning pistol powder, I consider it as slow burning pistol powder. but that just might be me.
one of newest favorite loads for 4227 is 20 grains in 45 colt with 454640 in the Rossi 92. 23 grains in 44 mag under a 250 gr Keith type bullet is another load i like. its good and accurate loads in both carbines. leaves a bunch more residue than other powders but works real well as far as accuracy for some reason.

And I almost forgot. It works wonderfully in 223 Remington with 55 grain bullets. Velocity in the 2,700 to 2,800 fps range. It is a reduced load which is very accurate in my rifles and not as loud as a full house load.

Powder burn rate numbers; 65 IMR 4227 54 2400 (59 Alliant Steel ) ( 61 N110 ) 62 Lil Gun 63 H110 64 Win 296 67 5744 68 1680 70 CFE BLK 73 (Reloder 7) (75 4198 ) all except the ones in parentheses are recommended for 350 Legend. I have loaded 4198 with 170 gr boolit to 1400 fps with 1.10 inch at 50 yards. The boolits were non-concentric. Went up a few grains more with no increase in fps after 1575 fps. Now I have concentric redneck swaged in a DIY Redneck swage die.. I have several different weights of 35 cal boolits no groove that come from my DIY Redneck five hold boolit mold because I forgot to lock the table. I have in my bucket list to work up a load w/Alliant steel and Reloader 7 if the need arises.

I might add I got in habit of using magnum primers with 4227. seems to help with less unburnt powder and residue.,

4227 appears to provide excellent accuracy (for proper loads) but not the highest fps. It is a fast rifle powder. I use it for mid-weights in 300BO. I get some leftover kernels in the barrel unless I use magnum primers. GRT (free QL) shows incomplete burn in shorter barrels. My 'opinion' is it starts to burn well but kinda stops when barrel pressure drops. Adding an extra grn or 2 doesn't increase fps much.

Otherwise, buy the 4227, let it sit in the cabinet until the cans become collectible

10 grains in 38 special using 155-172 grain semiwadcutters. Shoots well in the taurus 82 4 inch offhand at 25 yards.

12-14 grains in 357 mag using the same bullets from my 77/357. Shoots ok at 50 yards I think my I am chasing a trash scope around the target.

20-24 grains in 308 winchester using 170 grain lee flat nose bullets (with out gas checks) from an old browning blr. Easy to shoot and fire forms the brass. I like to shoot this offhand rapidly, doesn't beat me up or other shooters around me like full strength 308 does.

Note: the guns stay noticeably cooler during use and some soot it's not a big deal for me. Kinda like unique.

24.0gr 4227 under Lee 459-405-HB with a .75gr fluff of dacron is my 1884 Trapdoor 45-70 hunting load at 1120fps from 20" barrel.

IMR 4227 is my go to powder for cast boolts in .308 Win., .303 British and .44 mag. In Marlin 1894.

I've also used it in .45-70 when I had my converted Siamese Mauser.

If I loaded for more calibers I'm sure I'd be using IMR 4227 in them as well.

I've been using it for many years and like it.

17 grains of IMR4227,WLR primers,PPU 7.62x54r cases, and a Lyman 311299 cast bullet sized to .311 in my VKT Finnish M39 Mosin helped me take 1st place in the 100 yard portion of the CBA national match this year. I use IMR4227 with good results in 7.62x54r, 30-06, and 8mm Mauser.

Yes. The number, with 1 decimal place that immediately follows the Primer abbreviation. For example:
.30-06 Howa Lyman 311467 178 GCRN 5 .309 0.320 IMR 4227 LgRf 28.6 3.078 0 The charge is 28.6 grains.
The number before the powder type/name may be estimated BC, bullet size, or local alloy code, depending on what info' exists
I probably should have typed each line, but the copy from the .ODS file was a lot quicker.

I should be cautious mentioning this in the present company but in rifles IMR4227 works quite well with jacketed bullets also. In 1990 there was an IMR mini manual published with data for several common centerfire cartridges.

18.0 to 19.0 grains of IMR4227 in a .45 Colt case behind a 250 or 255 grain cast bullet is a good load in a S.A. Colt clone, without stressing them out. I've also 4227 with cast bullets for a .444 and .45/70 rifle; which works great for plinker loads, and is satisfactory for close range deer hunting. I believe Hodgdon's market both IMR and H4227 showing powder load recipes as being identical.

BUY IT! Even if you find NO use for it (unlikely), you can trade it for other propellants. It works well in all the original magnum revolver cartridges, and is excellent for .45 Colt in the TC/Ruger loads. It usually gives higher velocities than 2400, but not quite as high as H110/W296. The UPside of the 4227s is that they are not prone to "misfire" if loads are started at 10% below maximum. H110/W296 specify no more than a 3% reduction in charge, which is less of a margin than I like to work with.

Du Pont #1204, introduced in 1925, was directly replaced by IMR-4227 in 1935. 25gr to 30gr of #1204 was used in the 44-40 cartridge giving a 200gr JSP between 1,400 and 1,830fps (Sharpe 1937). IMR-4227 was superior and 29gr gave the 200gr JSP 1,890fps. No pressures listed for those loads but notes recommended by Dupont and we can assume a bit on the high side.

All rifle powders folks, so is 2400. 4227 is IMR's "Magnum" powder.

Bullet: Cast 194 gr Bradshaw-Martin (cast and powder coated by member Contender)
Brass: Winchester, R-P, Starline
Powder: IMR 4227 18.5 grs

Also did a batch with a little lighter bullet

Bullet: 185 gr powder coated (red) from Missouri Bullet Co.
Brass: Winchester
Powder: IMR4227 18.0 grs

Well, last weekend I was able to shoot my loads in my Ruger Maximum. They shot great and the recoil really wasn't bad. Then shot a few from a friend that were 180 gr MBC's in front of 13 grs of 4227. Nice mild load and seemd to be very accurate also (we were shooting hanging steel plates). I think I'm going to use the 18-18.5 gr loads if I use it for hunting otherwise I'll drop the load down for just target, steel, plinking (plinking with a .357 Maxi seems to be a oxymoron :) )

The newest can of IMR4227 (a week ago) I got was made in Canada.

I seem to remember John Taffin recommending 4227 in .45 Colt if you are having trouble finding an accurate load. I don't need powder and accuracy is something I rarely recognize at a shaky 80 YO. Besides, I'm endebted to Obama and his first term election. I laid in all sorts of reloading supplies in reaction to his election.
