.58 allin
.58 miller
.58 berdan
.58 benet

are all these rimfire? ...i know the benet is inside primed ...but is it fired from the rim edge like a .22?
...are all inside primed calibers fired like a .22 with a dent in the rim edge and not center struck?

No, they were often struck from the center. They were also a non-reusable cartridge type though. There are some excellent cartridge collector sites that will describe the differences in great detail.
Cartridgecollectors.org - is an example.

A lot of the early center fire cartridges used the Martin and Bennet primers and were drawn cooper and looked like rimfire cases with a crimp just above the rim. The 58 Allen for the 1865 trapdoor conversion was rimfire. The 1866 Springfield trapdoor was 50-70 centerfire. The early 50-70 and 45-70 were copper cased and Martin or Bennet primed. Custer's men learned how difficult it could be to extract a swollen copper case during heated battle. Drawing brass cartridge cases was perfected by the 1880's and the outside visible centerfire primer became the norm. Rimfire's still used copper cases well in to the 20th century.

I'm still looking, but I know somewhere I have a packet of 50-70 Benet primed cartridges. The inside the case but not in a primer pocket case must have persisted for a while.
Elk Hunter is absolutely correct.
Can you imagine the horror when you realize that your rifle is now a poor club because a case is jammed in the chamber? A group of reenactors had some copper cases made a while back and were purportedly able to re-create that scenario after rapid fire drills.

Don't forget the .58 Roberts. I have a rolling block that shoots it. Great fun!
