Hi. I recently got a set of .243 RCBS reloading dies to add to my meager reloading capabilities. A friend who casts Bullets said he could offer me a bullet no. 24-100-FN to use for target work and plinking. I looked in my Lyman reloading books, but found nothing for reloading data on this bullet. Does anyone have such info they could pass along?

Ironwrx,
welcome to the forum.

here is some data.

if you start loading cast in more calibers, look for the Lyman castbullet handbook.

Thank you. And the Lyman book sounds good too.

I found the key to happiness shooting cast in the 243 was to keep the loads really light. Less than 22 mag velocities and it worked great. I used it for cast bullet silhouette for a while with great success shooting 10-12 grains of Green Dot behind the 95 grain RCBS bullet. Red Dot also worked well but no more than 10 grains. Never did get it to work all that well with rifle powders.

If you mean you seek loading data for 100 gr. flat nose cast bullets, any 100 gr. data will be fine. If you mean you want loading data for that specific bullet you're probably SOL (that's a code word, it means "unfortunate") but that's okay because it doesn't matter anyway.

Try 2400 to match .22 rimfire magnum ballistics for a .243 load that kills squirrels like nothing else I've ever seen.

Ironwrx, You couldn't find any reloading data in the Lyman books because that is likely a RCBS design. Once you determine whether it casts large enough to fit your bbl., and what diameter to size it to, you may want to try 9 - 10gr. Unique or 13 -15.5gr. IMR 4198. Btw, I use the Lyman #245496, an 87gr. Loverin type with those loads and am quite happy with their accuracy.

And then there's the high speed stuff. Not a 243 but a 6mmR(same bore/groove,larger case). 85g Saeco,40.5g IMR4831,bragging groups @100. Sorry couldn't resist,haha.

Nice! My 6mm-222 with the 1:14 barrel works great at full speed with cast but I never got a 243 to do much going fast. Congratulations to you!

I second the vote for teh Lyman cast bullet handbook. Especially 3rd edition.

As opposed to the 4th edition?

The 24-100-FN is an RCBS boolit mould .
There is Data for this boolit in 243 Winchester in the RCBS Cast Bullet Manual number 1 .
8 different powders are listed ... let me know if you need additional data .

The 4th edition Lyman is the current in print manual and easy to get . $25 to $30
The 3rd edition is older , out of print and some try to sell them for stupid high prices ...
if you can get a 3rd edition for under $50 it's nice to have for older data and other information not in the 4th ... but a new Lyman 50th Aniversary edition Reloading Manual , which has some cast and some jacketed data, might be just as useful . It is in print and available for about $38 to $40 . Lots of good reloading info in it .

I would get the new 4th edition Cast Bullet Handbook , 50th Anniversary Edition if you reload some j-word bullets and the 3rd edition Cast Bullet Handbook if you can get a reasonably priced one .

RCBS Cast Bullet Manual are good if you have RCBS moulds ... but you don't see them for sale often .

I just use Quickload and seldom refer to my manuals any more. There's not much you can't do with it and I find the results more in line with the real world than most of the printed manuals.
