How much shoulder is needed for a muzzle brake? Thinking of putting a brake on a 6mm. I'm thinking of making it 1/2-28 threads. Is a final barrel OD of .575" enough of a shoulder? .037" each side.

That will work fine. You don't need to torque the brake down hard, if you tighten it to much it can squeeze the bore down. Make sure you dial in on the bore and not the OD of the barrel when cutting the threads, some bores are a little off center.

Everyone talks about baffle strike with a suppressor, NOBODY talks about the equivalent with a brake. My son's 300 WSM lost an 2 inches plus of barrel length when the brake (that I had installed for him!!!) decided to interfere with several Barnes bullets from both muzzle squeeze and being off of bore center.

Several years back I installed a brake on a rifle just before hunting season. The customer came back in with the last inch of the barrel bulged out and the brake gone. Seems he forgot to take his laser pointer out of the barrel before he fired it. Many of the brakes on the market are not bored out for caliber and must be bored out. Had one customer that installed his own after I threaded the barrel, he found it down range.

I usually thread going between centers. Otherwise I would need a really tight fitting pin to dial in off of the bore, and hope that the pin wasn't cocked.

This will make it simple, you can also check the depth of the rifling at the muzzle.
