For revolver, there’s nothing that compares to a SW 17 6”with hogue grip in my opinion. They are just great shooters and are fun for experienced shooter and perfect for teaching new shooters alike. Been shooting mine since Dad taught me with it when I was a boy and now I teach people with it.

Outside of revolvers though, the Ruger Mark IV Hunter SS is a pretty amazing shooter too. Wife’s anniversary present to me last year and it’s a tack driver too. Ends up being a toss up now for which 22 handgun I take anymore between these two.

Honorable mentions 50s era Buffalo 22 revolvers are fun just cause of how cheap they are but not great firearms, Ruger Standard Red Eagle, Ruger Mark I Bull Barrel (as good as MK IV but not as “cool” looking), Buckmark. All have their place and are fun to shoot but the 17 is definitely King of my 22 handguns.

My choice , without a doubt is the S&W model 18 or a model 17 from the same era . All that is dependent on what barrel length you like .

It's hard for me to decide. I have a S&W Model 17 with a 6 inch barrel and another 17 with an 8 3/8 inch barrel and target hammer and trigger. I try to give them equal time. Some days I take both to the range.

The 5-1/2" Single Six that I gave to my son, and the H&R model 999 top break that I gave to my wife are too much fun. I'm enjoying the Ruger Wrangler lately- not fancy but fun and accurate enough to fill the skillet.
There's a Single Ten here too- but I haven't even fired it. I ought to break it out if it's cool this evening.

The only .22 revolver I own is a Ruger Single Six...so it must be my favorite.

Cannot see buying a better revolver for shooting .22's. I do not hunt with a revolver so I am looking at finding a good quality PCP for pistol plinking. Much less costly to shoot and shooting spinner targets anyway.

My favorite 22 revolver is my Smith & Wesson Model 34 Kitgun with a four inch barrel that I bought new on 1981. I have shot around 80,000 round through it and it only seems to shoot better with time. The double action trigger pull is silky smooth and shoots about the same if I were shooting single action. It's only quirk is that in order avoid leading it must shoot waxy lubed bullets.

A year ago I let my daughter talk me out of my old Heritage Rough Rider 5 5/8ths" convertable .22lr or .22wmr.

Well I was able to replace it with a similar Heritage only with adjustable sights.

Now I have a Ruger NM Single six in .32H&Rmag which I dearly love. But a .22 it is not.

I also have a pair of Bond Arms revolvers in .22wmr but while they are small and easy to hide, they are not as much fun to shoot as the Heritage.

My favorite .22 revolver was a Colt New Frontier Buntline Special (7½" barrel, adj sights) that I foolishly let get away from me 30+ years ago. It would outshoot some rifles.

My currently owned favorite is a 1953 S&W K22. Although it is heavier than a field .22 needs to be.

I wouldn't mind having a 4" Model 63 like Bigslug showed in his post.

I never really warmed up to the Ruger Single Six, it seems just a touch too big in .22. The exact same gun in .32 H&R is just about perfect.

I can't decide between the Colt Officer's Model Match (1928-on the left of it's 38 brother) or the S&W M-17 (1974). Both are superbly accurate, but the Smith has a wonderful double action, courtesy of 40,000 plus rounds of K-mart, Wards and latterly Walmart cheapy bulk 22's. The single action of the Colt is slightly better.

I also have a S&W M-63 that rates very high, and I had an old Ruger Single six that was just like The First Revolver I ever fired.

But truth to tell, my favorite 22's are the old Colt's Woodsman guns. I have three pre-war, one Target model from 1951 and a Huntsman from the late 60's. Which is my favorite depends on which I'm shooting that day.

I am not sure I would kill for one of those but pillage and burn, probably. The 4" guns are prohib up here but if there ever was a revolver that would find it's way into my engine compartment as I crossed our border it would have to be it.

I do have a Riger SP-01 in .22lr with a 4.25" barrel so maybe pillage and burn are not on the table. The SP-01 is close to the Kit gun in size. Shooting the Ruger SA wirks as well as an off the chart DA trigger pull can. I have to investigate a lighter main spring. :>)

No, not legally. I could get a Wilderness Permit but that involves .357mag as a minimum cartridge. Trudeau is determined to keep us safe. Unfortunately, there is nobody to protect us from him! We have an election call in the offing so with some luck maybe we can send him packing. Hope springs eternal.

A Ruger Bisley .22 I've had since I was old enough to purchase a hand gun, and a Smith & Wesson 617 with a 4 inch barrel. Both are track drivers capable of shooting better than I'm able to utilize. It just depends if I'm plinking or working on my double action form, so I can't rank one above the other.

I would also vote for the S&W 617 with the 4 inch barrel. My old Bearcat is a close second but the fixed sights make it a bit more challenging! I get to enjoy the Ruger GP100, Single Ten, and Single Six Colorado Centennial model that my sons have, so I consider myself rather spoiled!

#1. S&W Model 617 HB. I use for off season PPC practice. I replaced the front and rear sight blades to allow a 50yd “neck-hold”. That is until .22lr became “unobtanium”.

#2. S&W Mod 34 2” Kit Gun. With good ammo, easily THE most accurate S&W I own. In Wyoming in 2009 I nailed a rough grouse through the throat at 41yds. Buddy I was hunting with was working part time at a resort restaurant as a sous-chef. He cooked the Roughed Grouse and two Blue grouse I’d shot with the 617. Best wild fowl I’ve ever eaten!

#3. Heritage Arms .22/.22wrm convertible w6”bbl/adjustable sights. Not as accurate as S&W’s but fun to shoot! Decent trigger and usable accuracy. I could by 5 for what an S&W costs. It’s now my carry along beater... weights little more than the little M34.

#4. Ruger RS-6”. No explanation needed. It shoots and feeds any standard or high velocity ammo. Sight was drifted decades ago to hit POA/POI.

Another vote for the S&W model 63 with 4 inch barrel. I bought mine new in 1978, then sold it to my friend's brother. He let me buy it back. It has taken many grouse and rabbits. It also shoots very small groups on paper. I only shoot standard velocity ammo through it. I have widened the rear sight so I can see the front sight clearly again, which helps tremendously in aiming.

I have owned a number of 22 revolvers over the years but not what I would call "expensive" models.

Right now, the only one I have is a Vintage 1970s Ruger Super Bearcat. I kept it because of the size and it's about the only handgun that I can get my wife to shoot.

My primary use for a 22 revolver was for taking care of critters on the farm and I like a revolver as it will take anything from a CB cap thru a long trifle. Two that I had were an H & R and a Heritage RR - both did the job but certainly not like a S & W, etc.

I have several semi-autos but with shortages/high 22 ammo prices, I just don't shoot them. If I could find a decent Ruger single six at a fair price, I would snap it up as I have always wanted one.

I have a pair of Ruger Mk III 22/45's, his and hers. Both wear cheap truglo Red Dots.
Both will outshoot any and all of my other .22's.

I have seen my wife put 10 into a pop bottle cap size circle with none touching the edges in under 7 seconds.
Mine will do the same only even faster. With the .22lr shortage and higher prices both are staying home for now. And this was about revolvers.

While the Mk III's are more accurate they are IMO not as much fun as the Heritage RR 6" with adjustable sights. With .22mags this will turn out very acceptable groups at 21 feet. And is just plain a hoot to shoot.

Really a great thread! Lots of good choices. So far, it seems, the S&W 17 and Ruger Single Six are in the majority. I've got a Mod. 17, great gun, highly accurate. I've also got a Taurus Mod. 96 that is very much like the S&W (probably couldn't tell them apart in the dark) that is slightly more accurate than the Smith. Both are 6". But I heard someone mention the word "fun", and I have one I haven't seen anyone else mention yet, close to the Ruger Single Six idea, an Italian Stallion. Of course it's nickname is Sylvester. It shoots apple sized (large apple) groups at 25 yds., but the operational word here was "fun".

I see some votes for the Ruger Bearcat as well. Very nice revolver. Very well made. Sort of expensive now, but what isn't? I bought one each for each of my granddaughters as being a "good to learn on" handgun.

The three revolvers that I have are a 4 inch Smith 617, a 1960's Ruger Bearcat, and a 1976 Ruger Single Six Colorado Centennial. I would rate the 617 as the most fun by a smidgeon simply for the ease of extracting the empties. The extra 4 rounds in the 10 shot cylinder vs six in the other two is also a nice bonus! But you can't go wrong with any quality 22 revolver! Everyone needs at least one!!

Best, most accurate .22 by far is an old but near mint S&W 17. But I rarely take it out. The one I shoot the most is a knockabout Iver Johnson "Target" model, which lives near the kitchen door for close-in defense against raccoons and opossums. So which is really my favorite?

I have a Ruger single six convertible and a Rossi 511. I'd be hard pressed to pick my favorite. The Ruger is more accurate, but the Rossi is more fun.

This thread has convinced me I need to go shooting instead of building fence. I guess the fence can wait till tomorrow.

1966 Colt Cobra 3"

...been looking for one for years...when they come up they just want more money than they are worth to me... wouldn't mind having one in .32 NP either...

There is a .22 Currier on GB right now...will sell for lots of money...

My favorite "fun" .22 revolvers....

Single Action: USFA Flat Top Target .22/.22 Magnum with 5.5" barrel

Double Action: 1954 vintage Colt Trooper 4" which just got a .22 Magnum cylinder added

Geez, it's been a Single Six Convertible for more than 40 years, but two years ago I found a M-18 Smith in LNIB for $400. That gun's become a regular for walking the dog and general around the farm totin'. And it's not ammunition sensitive...good grouping with CCI MiniMags, Federal Auto-Match, and even Remington Golden HP's.

But the story continues: my local 5-Star Pawn had a 6" bbl'd New Frontier Colt SAA in the case that I got for $600. The longer bbl. doesn't carry as well as the shorter Smith, but it's got a great trigger and is actually more accurate with the Magnum cylinder installed. It's my new, BFF...at least for this week! Rod Pic below of Smith M-18, my best shooter.

Smith & Wesson 6" Model 17. I cut my learning to shoot double action teeth on one. I haven't a clue how many rounds I fired through it, but it was many 1,000's. Sadly, I parted ways with it after several good years together. I never could gather up enough money back then to afford the luxury of buying another. Finally, life started looking up and several years back I picked up a Pre 17 K-22 5 screw. It sure brings back sweet memories every time I take it out shooting.

My most accurate .22 revolver is a Colt Diamondback, 4" blue with the original stocks on it. It always prints where ever the sights are looking. Got it by trading off a '98 Mauser I had that had been re-barreled (into a .243), re-blued and aftermarket stock and scope installed (bought it in this condition). The owner of the revolver wanted my rifle and I wanted his revolver. We traded even.

My handiest .22 revolver is a S&W model 43 Airweight Kit Gun, aluminum frame and cylinder. While chambered for .22 Long Rifle it does not like high velocity ammo and sticks fired cases in the chambers. I gladly fire standard velocity ammo in it. It is so light it is very easy to forget that it is on my hip. This one also produces tight groups, like the Diamondback above.

Another Ruger single six vote ...
Picked mine up years ago in my cowboy days on a ranch south of Ely , Nevada.
Pulled the trigger so much that I think it has contributed to my tinnitus but so much fun.
Shooting from hip , surprised myself as I got to be able to hit a five gal bucket at 20 yds. most of the time
Was always with me when riding in the mountains pushing cows.

My Ruger .22 Bisley. Only .22 revolver left in my safe. Found a .22 mag Single Six cylinder at a gun show, it dropped in and lined up perfectly. Even more accurate than the original .22LR cylinder.

A Ruger Mk II. I haven't had a .22 actual revolver in decades. I want one, though! Keep looking at the one that gets advertised for $119, and looks like a SAA Colt .45, but has a safety next to the hammer spur. Mama says I have enough guns.

Made in 1969, the first year that a start up company founded by a certain Karl Nill supplied the grips for Willi Korth.

A 1969 Korth series 24. The first of many Korths that I bought and that relegated all other .22 l.r. revolvers to the back of the safes, or straight into the for sale sections.

Have only owned one. Dan Wesson at Cabelas a few yrs back. Had to get it. What an overpriced junker. The sights were cockeyed. The latch was loose. The chambers were extremely rough and it shot around six inch groups off a rest at 50' I disassembled and fixed what I could and set to carefully remove the giant boring ridges that the factory ignored. This went on for awhile but the chamber mouths are a lot smoother and although they are, close to oversized, they are all about the same size and the gun shoots around two inch groups and often has a few cylinders shoot dead on. I expected more from my first DW .22 ever seen.

Only .22 revolver I have right now is a Wrangler, and it is an impressive $200.00 sixgun. Honestly, my meager skills couldn't take advantage of anything nicer so I'll stick with it. Planning to pick up one of the new birdshead grip versions too.

Most fun gun. Stainless Ruger Convertible Single Six with the 6.5" barrel. I am 80 years old and it takes me back to being a kid with a love for cowboy guns. A close second would be the 4" S&W K-Frame Pre-Model 17. It had been sent back to the factory for the 4" barrel and I bought it with the letter from S&W attesting to that. It is the same as the Model 18, except it has the target front sight.

I was in my mid 20's before I became drawn to the handgun for both hunting and target shooting. Thanks to Skeeter Skeleton and Ed McGivern. I purchased a S&W Model 17 and started down the path serious double action and long distance shooting. I can't even begin to estimate the number of rounds I fired through that gun, but I will say it taught me more than any other handgun I've ever owned hands down. Sadly, I lost it due to a theft on night at my home years ago. I really couldn't afford another one for a good number of years, but life got better and I remedied that situation some 10 years back. I found a very clean Pre 17 and we've became good friends. My 68 year old eyes won't let me do what my earlier Model 17 would do over 40 years ago. The last time I had it out plinking a month or so back, I managed to roll 5 out of 6 various tin cans, rouge dirt clogs and rocks at respectable ranges from 10 to 25 yards.

My small bore Revolver Class silhouette gun for 30 years, that I kept when I retired from competition. It is my old, new model, Ruger NR-9. It has Packmeyer Signature grips and a trigger job. Other than those two legal mods, it is 100% stock. It is a great shooting single action revolver.

Ruling out the couple of S&W #1's we have there has only been one .22 revolver in our house. I think it is an H&R 999 with a 6 inch barrel. Only reason we have it was to help out the widow of a good friend who past on 20 years ago. My FIL "borrowed" it for years trying to hold down the raccoon issues.
When I want to use a .22 we have a 1st Model Ruger that gets put to use.

The Colt Officers Model Match .22 is the best shooting .22 revolver, but I have an Iver Johnson Supershot Sealed Eight from 1938 more fun. It does not group quite as nicely as the Colt, but it acquits itself nicely in club matches sometimes besting guns that cost a lot more. The five inch bull barrel High Standard Citation is just plain scary accurate. In the mid-Eighties when small bore IHMSA matches were being held at French Range on Fort Knox it we tried it out on a lark. Even shooting cheap Winchester T22 it was capable of cleaning the course. It would hold its own competing in any class except revolver.

My only Colt .22 revolver is an old Trooper Mklll 6 inch with the satin nickel finish. I shot it a whole lot. But my favorite Colt .22s are my Woodsmans. But I might break down and get one of those 10 shot Smiths eventually. They look pretty sweet.

Never had a .22 revolver until recently; bought a Model 999 H&R (1954) and a Model 992 H&R (1949). Fun guns, but a little finicky with powder fouling & ammo choices. Just have to keep them clean and use the right ammo.
Have owned a MkII Ruger auto for years; 5.5" bull barrel with Volquartsen upgrades. Approximately 10,000 rounds through it. Shoots like a laser. Would stand on the frozen pond and shoot at the 18"x18" steel plate across the ice @ roughly 200 yards and then step back and shoot the empty cases laying around me on the ice just for fun. Burned a lot of ammo that way.

Had this for a long time and as my old eyes have trouble with open sights I put a dot on it. I glued (using aircraft proseal sealant) a piece of 3/8 .22 rail on to mount the sight. I can remove the rail and sealant at anytime and put the rear sight on, works great.

Back when I was just starting to shoot with a Smith model 15, my LGS talked me into a matching S & W Model 18. I'd then usually start a practice session with a box or two of .22s, then 50-100 rounds of .38 special. If I did my job right, tghat M18 would put them in the X riing all day.
