The worst condition 1909 Argentine Mauser you've ever seen?

Back in the neolithic age of milsurp importation...1990s-early 2000 you could buy junk like this from Century Arms in Vermont. Called "u-fix-em". This 1909 Argentine arrived complete even with cleaning rod for $18 with free shipping. It even has rifling. I am of the opinion that these chromed rifles which also included some 1891 models were navy issue and not "parade" rifles as some suggest.

But does it shoot? Well.... sorta. I fired a Argentine military cartridge in it ONE time. I measured the case length prior to shooting and after. The case streeeeetched .020".

But what about cast bullets and moderate charges? Yes, I did that. Lyman 311299 with moderate charge of Unique and those bullets tumbled beautifully at 25 yards. So, I have some .314" cast bullets to try.. for no reason other than I can. I don't intend on doing anything with this rifle. Not like I need to do anything with this rifle but its just a matter of general principles you understand.

I also have a very decent 1909 Argentine made by DWM. Purchased from a collector friend for $150 plus a few more bucks for a bag of Norma virgin brass. Good friend he was..

100% matching numbers to include the cleaning rod. Bore is excellent sharp & shiny. I have not yet worked with this rifle with cast bullets.

During those golden milsurp years I stocked up on enough Mauser actions to continue building sporters for years to come. Too bad that well dried up years ago. Fun fact: along with the order for the 1909 rifle, Argentina also ordered a bunch of replacement barrels. The bulk of these barrels were never used, and stayed in storage for years. Back in the good ol days when you could pick up Turks and Mosins for the price of a sandwich there were lots of new old stock 1909 barrels available. I think that I might have bought the very last one a couple of years ago. I'm going to be putting that one on a 1908 Brazilian receiver with mix master parts and a cheapo stock to build a fun to shoot cast boolit range queen/truck gun in 7.65x53.

Amen, brother. It pains me to think about young fellows today who would like to have and shoot
some of these vintage rifles but they've been priced out of this world with rampant inflation and
just time. Ordinary time.

In Argentina in the 90s they were sold for 200 uss !!!
I like the poster that says ENM RN 436 Rifle, it looks like it belongs to some school regiment, so it seems that the years have passed over it.
I will pass the photo to see if some former military friend tells me where he may have come from.

I have a DWM 1909 that I wanted to work in factory form, but it shot unsized 316299s through the target sideways at 25 yards. It is now rebarred to .358 winchester and waiting for me to fit it into a beautiful older sporter stock. And then to figure out sights.

this might seem somewhat obvious, but it is also a school related to the Argentinean Navy (Marina). So they were "navy issued" as you thought.

I don´t know what "Fusil F.N." stands for. Fusil means rifle but I´m kinda lost about F.N. The only FN rifles were the FALs which replaced Mauser 1909s. Perhaps F.N. has a different meaning or that plaque belonged to a different type of rifle.

I saw one not that long ago in a local gun shop. The stock was cut on the front end, the buttplate gone and the stock cracked on the back end. The gun was heavily pitted, the barrel more or less trashed. The shop was asking something like $249 if I recall. I don't know who bought it, but someone did.

I've been seeing a lot of old Mausers popping up lately, some in better condition than others, some just out and out trashed. I see them alongside sporterized SMLE's and some Arisakas that look like just quit fighting the war last month. I recently saw a Mauser K98, most of the gun is there, made in 1945, the bolt doesn't match, neither does the floorplate or most of the parts. The stock was totally butchered, and what's worse, it doesn't have the disassembly ring, which made it a late production or Kriegsmodell gun. The worst part is, they want a small fortune for it. It seems it's getting harder to find "shooter" Mauser military rifles that aren't completely trashed for a decent price and guns that are all original in excellent or even good shape cost as much as the down payment on a new car.
