I have a great deal of cast lead balls, in many calibers that I have stored and haven't shot in years and when I checked them they were all covered in white fuzz / powder. what is this and how do I stop it? are they still good to shoot in this condition?

That's an oxide of lead and quite toxic if ingested. However, this isn't to suggest they're unusable. I'd put them in a strong plastic bag, squirt them with WD-40 or the like, roll them around for a while and then use as you normally do. Please dispose of the oxide laden plastic bag safely, but you already know that.

Put them in a plastic bowl and pour a can of Coke on them. Rinse with water and repeat if necessary. LLA coating (light) will prevent it from happening to stored balls.

hey are usable just like stated. If you cast, I would just recast them. They get that way over time especially when exposed to air. You could coat them with something to help keep the oxidation down. Keep in an air tight container.

Well, I learned something today. Don't eat the white stuff on the lead.

I put those ones in a canvas bag with a bit of powdered graphite - rumble em round in there for a bit - they come out slick and shiny, ready to load.

Lead Styphnate is an explosive used in priming compounds. You had litharge, or lead oxide. Litharge was used as a paint pigment for a long time and is sweet to the taste. That is why kids like to chew on it.

I've had that occur and did the WD40 treatment which stopped the corrosion. They can be fired as is but just don't put them or your fingers in your mouth. They are so toxic that I've had deer drop dead DRT when I shot them with those corroded balls. :violin:
