trip on i-80 and i-35

need to take a trip to Minnesota for my brother-in-laws funeral and was wondering if any members are close to i-80 thru Nebraska and Iowa and then on i-35 north to Minnesota. we are taking the best vehicle we have but I like to plan for the worst and fear a break down far enough from home that I will not have a support structure to help. probably worst area will be from mid Nebraska to upper Iowa. anybody along the route that would not mind doing a rescue could you please pm me your number and location. I have every reason to believe my brothers truck (a newer Nissan with around 50k on it) will make it no problem but I like to preplan for problems just in case. amazing what old age does to you, at 18, I jumped on a motorcycle and went cross county with never a care in the world and now I worry about a simple trip. if nothing else your knowledge of decent repair and towing services in a given area could really come in handy.

I am 15 miles west of Owatonna. Owatonna has a fair Cabela's. The coffee is always on with free tours of my basement.

Not my end of the world...but what a great post! I drive some old stuff, most over 200K miles. Might be stealing this concept for future trips. I Know I would lend a hand to a fellow member and imagine many here would do the same!

I thought about just waiting and if something happened, then ask for help but my phone sucks as an internet device and I figured having some numbers ready was an easy solution. forgot about aaa, shows how much I travel nowadays, will see if my brother has it.

I've had AAA for @ 30 years. It has saved my bacon more times than I can remember! I've never owned a new car, and most likely never will.

it would be a great honour to meet you and see some of your museum. we will have to see how the time works. I can not get away until friday and my brother has to be back in denver monday night. looks like its a 12 or 14 hour trip each way.

Most insurance companies have a roadside assistance service for a few bucks a month. I’d check there before AAA. I live near the the I35 & I80 junction in Des Moines. But all my vehicles have 2 to 5 times that many miles on them…. Feel free to PM if you want my phone number.

I haven't kept up on current times, but a general tip for navigating the cities is to avoid the major freeways if possible. I35 is fine right up until the metro, when it can turn into a stop and go (emphasis on stop) at certain times, especially this time of year. I was always coming in from the west. Highway 55 is way better than interstate 94. I avoid i35 and 169 specifically like the plague, they are probably the worst offenders, especially with the tunnels. It all turns into a cluster muck when you get to the heart of minneapolis/st. paul anyway, but it can be really bad on certain roads. Road construction is also in full swing, so keep an eye on that.

I won't be anywhere near where you are going, so I can't help this time. If you ever find yourself in western MN, or eastern SD, my door is always open.

she lives west of the city in a small little town and we will NOT be going into Minneapolis, even for a million dollars. I hope to be thru the big cities at off peak hours to beat rush hours.

I lived in the Twin Cities around year 2000, drove to Denver three times for holidays with my sister. Easy-peazy, but that was 20 years ago. I had a shunpike route that went from MNPLS to Sioux City via Worthington, Minnesota. Route 60 down to Le Mars, IA, then 75 to Sioux City, then 77 down to pick up US 30 at Fremont, avoiding Omaha altogether. US 30 to Grand Island, NE., and from there you have multiple chances to jump onto I-80.

AAA once saved my bacon when the engine in my van blew 100 miles from Sheridan WY on a trip from Ohio to Idaho. And several other times. No one should be without it.

If she is west you may be better off going up I29 to Sioux Falls then I 90 east to MN23. 23 diagonals across the state to Duluth and you can pick up US 212 and MN7 to head to the west metro area. Probably save a few miles and avoid some city traffic. I am out in west central/SW MN area and I take 212 into the metro if I have to go there(not my choice, sometimes get a specialist doc from there). I stay out of that liberal cesspit of a city if I can!

I drove from Evanston Wy to the twin cities over the past two days. We went north to I90. I80 is terrible for traffic, especially semi’s. If you have a good route north, I’d recommend it over I80.
