So I tried running 30-30 brass into 6.8SPC dies and came up with this idea for those .270 molds I'm not using, a cute little .27 bore cartridge, a little bit bigger than a 25-20 or 25-35 but smaller than a 30-30. Some day I might have to do something with it, figure out what neck length and what to chamber it in.

I would definitely like to see a lever gun in 27-30! I really like my 270 Winchester with cast and am seriously considering the 277 Wolverine in an AR upper.

The 7-30 Waters never developed the following it should have. Putting it in the 94 Winchester limited pressure for factory ammunition. But it had a flatter trajectory than the .30/30 and decent downrange ballistics.

Good luck with your project. “Cuteness” can get costly. A single shot platform would be my choice.

This really could be a 'INEXPENSIVE', maybe more like 'LESS COSTLY' than many. Standard loading dies and chamber reamers would work, though a .270 neck reamer and throater might add to the cost, but probably cane be rented. I had something like this on my list for one of the beater Savage 99 30-30's I have. Standard dies and reamers always go a long way to keeping costs down. A rimmed 35 Rem on a poor shooting 303 is on the list. A 2" 300 Savage on the Marlin 336 is another back in the 70's, using 308 brass and 300 Savage dies - reamers, before the 308 Marlin and 307 Win, probably easier/better, no difficult to find brass. I did a 270-08 Improved on a Savage 99, right before the 7-08 became factory.

If possible to locate one. H&R Handi rifle. this would make a good gun for testing the caliber. I did one in 30-30 AI
was a .223 barrel. cut off at about 7" long. reamed out barrel stub and threaded it. had a spare 30 cal blank. threaded outside to match inside of barrel stub.
threaded and pinned. called barrel stubbing.

Good Remington 700 take off barrels in .270 were common not long ago for $50 or so. A good start for a stub job as mentioned above.

My 27 is a Savage 270 using necked up 250/3000 brass.

Several years back a customer wanted a 6MM 30-30, sort of in between the 219 and 25-35 but close to an AI shoulder.

I built a couple of 277 wolverines one is a 16 in with a 1-10 twist and a 10.5 in. with a 1-8 twist both are great shooters and both will shoot 140 gr. cast p.c. bullets

The 6.8mm SPC is based on the .30 Rem case which basically is a rimless .30-30. My idea was to make a rimmed 6.8 SPCR for use in single-shot actions using .30-30 brass. I used a Ruger #3 for my SS so I just chambered for the standard 6.8. It has become my favorite deer rifle.

This is my 27. It is a 270 IHMSA. Had it built on a Marlin XS7. The cases originally were made from 300 Savage brass but I use 6.5 Creedmoor brass.

The mini .270 (6.8 SPC) is a good cartridge for deer and hogs and coyotes. It punches above its weight- or the “weight” wasn’t needed to begin with.......

Isn’t that neck a little bit long?

For cast bullets long necks are a good thing.
It's just a straight case with a boosted powder capacity.
