A crazy nice 80 degrees at 8pm this evening, so I elected to sight in my 30-30. I recently mounted my 6x Burris Fullfield 2 on it. I fired 3 shots at 40 yards into a nice 3/4" group. They were low and left. Holding the crosshairs on the Bullseye, looking through the scope I moved them to the bullet holes. The next 3 shots were also 3/4" a 1/4" to the right of the aiming point.
I'm planning on shooting groups at random chances until the aiming points are used up.
The load is 25 grains of 3031, CCI primers, with the C309170F Lee sized .309" lubed with LLA.
I think the 6x and Mauser are a good pair.

Nothing seems as nice to me as a trim sporter on a small ring Mauser. Mine is a 7x57.

I do have a Savage 340 in .30-30 which I like very much, it's not really what I'd call a tack driver with cast, but it's pretty good and not picky, shoots every cast combo I've shot through it pretty well.

My son shot it for the very first time. It was good to see him shooting his first Mauser and first 30-30 simultaneously. He called his flyer of his 6 shot group. He marked his shots with his initial. It's always great when my kids shoot with me- even though they are grown up.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210721/57de04c5dd04a93985a4324a98d988c5.jpg
I dont know how I deleted the previous post with the pics, op error no doubt.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210721/9d8ee250c0bdea3e3ad6a9b3c5792db3.jpg

TbG,

I am envious. All my .30/30's are lever actions. I have been on the look out for a 788 but when I do find one, the guy who owns it thinks VERY highly of it and I cannot justify the $$$.

If your gun has "warts" I am not seeing them. But you could try this stuff...

I got out my older straight stocked Marlin 336 in 30-30 the other day. I was doing some penetration testing on gallon milk jugs of water. I have not found my cast 311041reloads for it yet, but the J word reloads were Speer 170 grain FN over 28 grains of IMR 3031. I was amazed at the penetration. The bullet sailed through 9 jugs of water veered off course and missed the 10th jug. My plan is to take that old 30-30 after Mrs whitetail, and put my new sausage stuffer to work this fall.

Yes, 444. It's the 1916 Spanish built version of the 1893 Mauser. The action is 100 years old this year I believe. I'd have to remove the front scope mount to confirm that, though.....

i have 2 1916 spanish mausers. the first one is at my gunsmith's and it will be a 6.5 swede. it had a horrible trigger, so i(or rather the gunsmith) put in a dayton trigger kit. he also did d&t for a scope and he bent the bolt handle. the second one is still up in the air.

I guess I should mention at this point that I would confidently hunt deer or hogs with this load- [emoji848][emoji846]
This gun, aside from the barrel work, only required a rim stop screw on the follower and facing the bolt a bit and extractor relief. That's it. Load it carefully, stack the rims, and run it like a Mauser. It feeds just fine with no rail work. Maybe luck? I don't know if a 98 would work like this- but it might.....
The 30-30 is just a cool cartridge. The first US smokeless commercial cartridge. And I killed my first deer with one.
I always wanted a 788( or a Winchester 54!) but the funds for those were fleeting.

Regarding the M98 mentioned above; As luck would have it I acquired an M98-based 270 Win. a couple days ago from an old friend. I inquired here about a 30-30 build on this action and the response was overwhelming ly "NO".

I saw that, Centershot. That's why I posted what I did about the feeding test with 30-30 to determine things from the start.
I know of a guy on here that converted an Arisaka 38 6.5 to .38-55 of all things- and it works.
I'm not saying that the 30-30 will work from a 98- but I'm not saying that it won't either.
As said about your .270, setting the barrel back and rechambering will be the easy way out. And you'll have a Mauser .270- like lots of people.
I've been waiting for someone to show me their Mauser 30-30 for a while, I'd love to see another one.
If you have to pay a gunsmith to do it all, yes it will be costly.

Thomas I have been rolling this around in my head since last summer when you and I were talking about it. Nearly bought an action a time or two, but about a month ago I was in a high end gunshop in Lexington KY, and on their beater rack, was a Savage 325 I think, bolt action 30/30 priced at $250. The blue was thin, and the stocks finish was cracking badly, but she worked smooth and when I dropped a light down the barrel, she was bright and shiny, showing very little if any use. I brought it home for $225 tax and all, and it shoots and works great. I am going to hot blue it here in a week or two and refinish the stock.

Sam, I had a Stevens bolt 30-30 a long time ago. It had trigger problems, and I found out that Savage changed trigger parts a few times on those rifles! I got it sorted out and put a Tasco pistol scope on it. Pseudo Scout. It shot ok, but was heavier than I like with the 30mm scope.
I tried a Weaver side mount with a 4x Bushnell and I didn't like that either- I'm too used to low center mounted scopes, I guess.
In reality, it was stocked for the iron sights and I should have put a reciever sight on it.
I only hear good things about them- and I've got a line on a 340 in triple duece waiting to see if it's a bargain.
We could get by with .308 Winchester bolt guns by loading to 30-30 levels but where's the sport in that???

I have always liked the look of that gun since you first posted pics of it way back when.

Wish I could stumble across a 93/95 action just for this very purpose.
My only 30-30 is in a Contender ad it is fun what little I have shot it.

Any chrono data for that 25 gr. 3031 load?

TC, I don't have a chronograph any more so I'm just guessing 1500fps or so from my 22" barrel.. Lyman 45th shows a 173 gr Lyman cast bullet going 1780 fps from a 26" test barrel. My bullets weigh 180 grs.
My friend has a Magnetospeed that I want to borrow for a day.

All done- shot two 3 shot groups, pulled a shot I think on the second group. I had two shots left so I exploded a half gallon jug of ice with one and missed a red wasp on the target backer" by that much!"-with the other.
I'm going to give Varget a try next.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210725/ff559fa4486b0bad32b33e43ed298003.jpg

The K4 is on an AR 5.56 Dissipator waiting to be sighted in with 55gr sp. It's staying, Mark.
Unless you're talking about the original K4-F with post reticle- like an idiot I sold that one.....and the two K6's that were on it. I've still got the K10- its on my 80% AR .223. I guess this gun, like my Tikka 22-250- makes a good test vehicle for scopes.
