If you guys don't mind please list the brand and type of powder it is. If and when things get back to normal I want a grocery list to keep in my wallet for those random Academy and Cabelas runs.

For revolvers, I don't load for any semi's, it's Unique, Bullseye, W-231, SR-7625, IMR and H 4227. I have and have used 2400 and H-110/296. If I can't find a suitable load with one of those, for any handgun, I should quit.

No one likes Lil'gun?

Evoken

Lil' gun has a reputation of burning up forcing cones in revolvers. Some folks say this was disproved in all but one manufacturer (freedom arms I believe). However to me it's just not worth the chance of ruining a 1000$ revolver.

When I could get it I used AA5 and AA7 for my pistol loads (.357, 9mm, .45acp). Measured well and burned clean.

Now days I am using 700X, Blue Dot and Titegroup cause that is what I have. I don't usually stock up on pistol powders like I do for the rifles.

I use HS-6, Unique, HP-38, VV N310 and Bullseye. I don't load much full on magnum stuff. The 310 works great for light .38 boolits and is also very good for .45 200 swc. HS-6 for .44 mag and heavy .357 boolits. Unique and HP-38 in .44 special. Bullseye for hbwc.

I do them all with only two powders

Bullseye and AutoComp

Do not use Unique, Herco, Red Dot or any large particle flake powders because they do not measure uniformly in the Star and Dillon machines.

Bullseye, Red Dot, AA#2, Unique for all of those listed for general use loads. For magnum performance from the magnums, I use H110 or Winchester 296- whichever I can find- they are the same powder.
LilGun was ok in .357 and .41 magnum for me. I bought it for .22 Hornet; when I sold the rifle, I used it up in the Blackhawks.
I'll try other powders but the above is where my experience exists.

No one likes Lil'gun?Lil gun is the smallest/finest granulated hottest burning powder I have ever used.

It is a very application specific powder, and runs the guns so hot they will remove the prints from your fingers if you touch the barrel, after extended shooting.

Lil gun is like a powerful abusive titegroup.

9mm cast -alliant power pistol (for accuracy/match loading) and alliant red dot(for low recoil, barely enough recoil to cycle my cz, dribble brass on my right boot loads)

9mm jacketed-alliant (unique, power pistol, blue dot) (blue dot for accuracy and bonus fireballs)

38 special- ww231(wadcutters), alliant red dot (taurus 82 target loads), unique, Imr 4227(full power 38 special, accurate too), imr trail boss. ( trail boss smells like cat urine yuck)

357 mag cast and jacketed-ww296/h110, imr 4227,

357 mag jacketed-alliant 2400/ww296 (muzzle blast so intense the targets paper get shredded at 3 yards, I needed to know! )

I like the smell of unique, power pistol and ww296. It smells like freedom.

2400 - for heavy magnum loads

After the 2012 shortage I made this list and carried it in my wallet , I have since found most of these powders and tried them ... all with great sucess , well some a little better than others ... but it has opened my eyes, for 40 years I used only Bullseye , Unique and 2400 ... there are so many other powders that do as well and can be used when you can't find your favorite .
I like the Accurate line and Red Dot . For about 25 years I got by with just Unique ... but Unique isn't great for light target loads ... no matter how you hold your mouth !

I do not reload all of the calibers you list and there are some variables with bullet materials, styles and sizes so these are general.

357 Magnum - 2400

38 Special - W231 and occasionally Titegroup

44 Special

44 Magnum

9mm - Titegroup and W231

45acp - W231 and CFE

40 S&W - Titegroup but I need to work loads with 231 and CFE

I buy big batches (to save on shipping/hazmat) off of the web.

For heavy magnum type loads, I have moved away from 296/H110 and started using either the slightly slower WC 680 (milsurp version of AA 1680) or the slightly faster Shooters World Heavy pistol (almost identical to AA #9). Both of these powders seem much less temperamental than the Hodgdon stuff.

For all my other handgun ammo it is either Titegroup or Promo (bulk version of Red Dot). These two are on the fast burning side. I prefer Promo for most stuff but use Titegroup where I want less volume (this is good for the 9mm and similar), or the better metering in really small charges.

Almost any handgun or shotgun powder can be made to work in most of those.

tazman has it right. Pre-panic, I used to use a lot of 231 for plinking ammo, and 2400 or H110 for magnum level loads. Now I'm not quite so picky.

Red Dot and Green Dot can make some spectacularly accurate loads, but they don't meter well in small doses. I tend to use a dipper for small charges, and also small quantities of cartridges.

I use a lot of bullseye and clays for general plinking/blammo ammo. If you can't find an accurate load with either 1 of those powders somethings wrong. Easy metering and small charge weights, a little goes a long way.

Always used ww452 and now WST over ww231/hp-38. Always got better accuracy or easier to find accurate loads with WST over ww231.

I burn a lot of powder pistol rather than unique. I keep unique around for a general do/all powder for testing loads over a chronograph & comparing that data to what I'm really interested in. Power pistol tends to out perform unique in a lot of different calibers producing higher velocities with either the same pressures or lower pressure loads.

For heavy mag loads I use mainly 2400. There's always h110 and mp-300 laying around but those are for "specialty" loads.

I also keep an 8# jug of trailboss around for general plinking/blammo ammo loads. It will put lead down range in every pistol/revolver/rifle I reload for.

What I don't like doing is loading down a powder to make lite loads. If I want lite loads I have clays and bullseye for that. Don't need to dumb down ww231 or unique. Same with too lite of a load with 2400, the lite loads will start have soot & unburnt powder. I'd rather use power pistol for those loads.

Don't like maxing out a powder to make heavy loads either. I'd rather keep in pressure ranges where my casting alloy performs at a high level. Then use a powder that burns fast/slow that stays in that pressure range producing the velocities I'm trying to achieve. Makes no since to max out a load of power pistol when I can take a couple 1000psi off a load and get the same velocities with 2400.

Reloadin Tip ... Don't limit yourself to one or two powders , for 40 years I only used Bullseye and Unique with a little 2400 for heavy loads .
In 2012 I woke up and could find No Bullseye , No Unique and No 2400 ...
Don't hamstring yourself to one powder ...have several backups and by now you should have had a lifetime supply hoarded away ...if not , get prepared for the next shortage ...You know it's comming next election cycle ... and you know which election I'm talking about .

Red dot , Unique and Be-86 work well in all of those , for the magnums I also use 2400 and WW 296.
I use very little 2400 and 296 the way I shoot now but keep a pound or 2 of each around.
Red dot can be picky on how consistent it throws from some presses and measures but I like the way it bulks up for its weight and it seems to shoot well for me even in really light loads .

Lots of options, but I generally use 2400 in the magnums and bullseye or W231 in the rest. I use titegroup mostly for subsonic 9mm and 38spcl. I’ve been using a lot of ramshot silhouette lately, have about 5 of 8lbs left, just trying to reduce inventory.

Someone above mentioned ww452, never heard of it but have a case of AA452 that I’ll load in 45acp if some old trap shooter doesn’t talk me out of it.

If you need some powder to get started and are close enough to Charlotte to visit send me a PM. I have a couple 15lb kegs of Bullseye that I’m not using, but also lots of 1lb bottles of any of these powders (except red dot and promo). We’ll come to a fair price on a few pounds.

I’ve only used Universal Clays and Titegroup so far in 25 years of hand loading for .38 special and .44 special (tiny bit .45 acp and .45 Colt) and good results. Some unburned powder using Univ clays but could be something I’m doing wrong. I use these because I bought ALOT years ago and will use it all up. Accuracy good and I am not a scientific handloader, just want decent loads for range fun mostly.

Only load 45 ACP now and use Bullseye (12 # on hand) but have used WW452, WW473, and Unique.

38 spcl Unique and Bullseye

357 Mag Unique and Allaint 2400 (heavy loads)

9mm Unique, WW473, Bullseye

Stopsign32v, I load for all the cartridges listed - except 9mm.

I have been reloading for ~45 years and it seems like I tried every new powder along the way. I also "bought out" other folks' reloading supplies, as they aged out of reloading. This fostered a lot of experimentation and with use of a chronograph, I solved some old reloading questions, busted a few myths, and finally settled down with a reloading "program", that standardized my reloading. I don't really load anything "HOT" anymore, it just never really paid off. Yes - I did wear out a few guns.

In the non-magnum calibers listed, I found that a "balance" between SAAMI pressure specs and "standard velocity expectations" are easily attainable in most handguns - with multiple powders. Your chronograph's data is your guide. It will help you find that "sweet spot" - for a particular handgun, using a particular powder. Then, you can literally chase similar performance (using fewer reloading components) with other powders, to reproduce the sweet spot with multiple powders (if you want to). Some folks just quit at that point, and load up all the cases they have with one powder / one load. This works until your favorite powder is in short supply.

In the higher pressure cartridges, the game changes a little, but by setting a reasonable limit for pressure, you can select a powder with an appropriate burn rate and not get into pressure problems, if you just "sneak up" on the "Magnum Sweet Spot". I have found it simply amazing how well everything works at 90-95% of maximum. In this case, "maximum" doesn't always mean maximum pressure. I am not aware of any of us regular reloaders that have access to pressure testing equipment, so we have to look at physical evidence, like case head expansion, ease of case extraction, effort to resize fired cases, primer flattening (not always consistent, brand-to-brand), and chronograph data. When you begin to duplicate velocities in modern reloading tables - with the same relative barrel length - you can track your own physical evidence - FOR YOUR GUN - and "see" the physical effects of increasing pressure. As you approach the maximum loadings in modern reloading tables, it can get "squirrely". Then you back off slightly, check velocity and if that meets your own velocity expectations, your shot-to-shot variation, and produces good accuracy - you are at/near the "Sweet Spot".

For the non-Magnum cartridges, I frequently load at 95% of the listed maximum. It just seems like velocities are "nominal", everything is working in harmony and this includes multiple powders. Nothing gets stretched, nothing erodes, no squibs, no real surprises.

In the Magnums, I find myself loading cast bullets at three power levels: 1. ~800 ft/sec - that duplicates "Special velocities" in Magnum cases and guns are easier to clean. 2. 1000 ft/sec - this produces a significant increase in power, while not challenging transonic effects. Few cast bullets should lead your bore / cylinder at 1000 ft/sec. 3. 90-95% of "Maximum" - roughly 1200 ft/sec - this is pretty potent stuff and still doesn't stretch anything. You can shoot at this pressure level and still enjoy it - maybe all day.

Now, back to my powder selection. I have a wide array of powders and this still irritates some folks, but for cast bullets - BULLSEYE, UNIQUE, and 2400 will still get the job done, in all the calibers listed (I don't load 9mm).

Multiple powders of other brands (2 steps up and down, in the Burning Rate Table) will also provide good results and if you scale them carefully, will get you to the Sweet Spot quickly, without wasting projectiles, primers, or powder.

A lot of folks feel that cleanliness is important, but I just haven't found that to be essential, or even attainable, with cast bullets. Yes, UNIQUE is dirty, but that may be more bullet lube, than powder. I am too old fashioned to even try powder coated bullets.

I am in total agreement with 358429 (above) - "I like the smell of unique, power pistol and ww296. It smells like freedom." I had an old friend that had his doctor "prescribe / recommend" more pistol shooting - as therapy. It was the nitroglycerin vapors that made his heart feel better.

I hope this makes sense, for cast bullet loading. We can discuss jacketed stuff , if it interests any of you.

Thanks, Tom "carelesslove" Love

If you guys don't mind please list the brand and type of powder it is. If and when things get back to normal I want a grocery list to keep in my wallet for those random Academy and Cabelas runs.

357 Magnum H-110, 2400, Unique

38 Special WW-231, Bullseye, Red Dot, Tite Group, Unique

44 Special Red-dot, Unique, Power Pistol, Titegroup, 2400

44 Magnum H-110, AA-9, 2400

9mm Power Pistol, Tite group, Bullseye, Unique, WW-231, Autocomp

45acp Bullseye, WW-231

etc

These are my favorites, from most liked to least per caliber. But if I could only have one, it would definitely be WW-231.

Some may notice the absence of Unique from the 44 magnum, but I only load 44 Magnums as Magnums, strictly for hunting these days. Light and mid-weight loads are loaded in the 44 Special case.

44 Special --- Unique

44 Magnum Unique or 2400

9mm --- 231 or Unique

45acp --- 231 or Unique

Lot of others will work just as good but I have settled on these. You can tell, these are mostly "Old School".

Bullseye, Unique, 2400.
I gotta say, if you're looking forward to Cabela's and Academy runs, you're doing it wrong unless you plan on giving up reloading soon.
If you're buying enough 8 lb jugs of powder and sleeves of primers, hazmat is not even a consideration.

I run my .44mags in four main power levels. I like Hodgdons Clays for its cleanliness at lighter charges. I also use Red Dot and Titegroup in that power range but Clays is my favorite in that range.

My second power level is where Unique resides. I am a fan of Skeeter Skelton. He loaded the .44 Mag with 8.5 gr of Unique with the popular 250 Gr SWC. That’s how I “roll” with it as well.

My next power level utilizes HS6 and if I had to use just one powder for 90% of my shooting, it would be HS6. I load it at 11.8 gr. with a large pistol magnum primer pushing a RCBS 250K. Excellent load!

My top of the range in the .44 Mag ultilizes 2400, H110 (WW296). These are my pack a lot and shoot some load range.
