Argentine Model 1891 Mauser w/scope

Argentine Mauser Model 1891. Another gunshow purchase $100 (circa 1999). Pristine with the exception of the crest being ground off. C-prefix dates to 1892 (per Webster's book). I own both this 1891 and a DWM Model 1909 Argentine Mauser. The 1909 just won't shoot as good as this 1891. I haven't spent enough time with the 1909 so it may show it's true colors eventually. Brass is Norma & Graff.

This target shows me zeroing when using the scope for the first time. The first 4 shots were dialing in the scope at 50 yards. Then the next 10 rds went repeatidly into the X ring. This target is typical for this rifle. Scope mount is my own manufacture.

Lee 170 gr flat nose .314" (.30-30 bullet) using 10.5 grs Swede gallery powder (like Unique). Its a powder puff load for wimmin and children:-).

In general, the Argentine Model 1891 is a very interesting rifle to collect as there are myriad differences throughout the production years which lasted until 1902. Many like this one were imported in like-new, unissued condition for very modest cost.

Funny you show this, last trip out to range I has my 1891 out. It shot amazing as well with my cast loads. I have to size my heads to .315.

Thanks for posting this! I recently acquired a '91, with a low "B" prefix serial #. It was in a sporter stock, fortunately the barreled action was untouched other than bolt handle being turned. Found a 90% original stock on the 'bay and two are joined.

Am going to get the S&K long ladder mount for mine and intend to use the rifle in the local CBA match. What scope are you using?

my 91 is made in 1900. i then had my gunsmith d&t and put on lyman aperture sight. i haven't shot it........yet. i'm going to use a lee 312-185r sized to .313".

the other two(i put the pictures somewhere) i still have to find the date it was produced. they are both sporterized, but the one has a "custom"(i say this lightly) black walnut stock and it has the recoil pad. in two weeks or so, i'll be done with the stocks and i'll show them.

I have a nice example, but it is in a sporter stock. Had it for several years, but still not fired it. And I have some of the Swede powder, from the wooden bullet rounds, and have found it quite useful in light .30 cal loads

The mount is one I made some years back. Its not as low as I would make one now but I have no plans on making any more.

Use Unique as a guide when loading the Swede powder. A powder puff load would be like 10.5 grs.

I have the Webster book so I can tell you when it was made. You can PM the serial number to me and don't forget the alpha prefix. The rifle in the photo looks to be one of those sold by Montgomery Wards. They have that distinctive bolt handle bend and chopped stock with the lower band. I have the advert around here somewhere (on the harddrive).

Mine is a C-prefix made in 1892 so your B-prefix was also 1892. The bolt handle bend could be one of the Montgomery Wards guns. See the advert I just posted.

Here is mine. It came drilled and tapped for a scope. And no rear sight. But i like it. It came with dies too. And 60 rounds of Hornady ammo. I got it for 200.00 OTD. Been awhile since i had it out. Maybe tomorrow ill take it out and my Mosin Nagant.

Not a MW rifle, mine still has a 29.5" barrel and came with what's left of the badly hacked original, serial number matched, stock. I'll post pics later. Also found a serial number chart (can't recall where now, milsurps site maybe?) for Ludwig Loewe and DWM:

Same source shared the serial numbering process but don't know if that was for all Mausers or just the Argentine...


The use of a limited length serial number and prefix/suffix was just a way to avoid long serial numbers and simplify the numbering process itself, which was largely a manual operation. Numbers would run 1-9999, then A1-A9999, then B1-B9999 and so on. When Z9999 was reached, the next number would be AA1-AA9999, then AB1-AB9999, etc.

Decided against the S&K scout mount and am going to have receiver D&T'd.

the "custom" stock is an original one, they replaced the steel butt pad to a rubber one.

the first one("dark walnut" stock, "remmy" front sight, 20 7/8" barrel and browning butt pad) is a a2xxx and it is a 1893 Ludwig & Loewe carbine.
