View Full Version : Square Grips on a round butt ?

My custom 5" 686 dash4 is my favorite revolver.

It's a round butt

I have these old grip that came on a 586-2 I foolishly traded for a 629 years ago.

They seem to fit solidly and unless you look at the back, they look wonderful.

Maybe I'll try to get some wood and fill in the gap.

What do you guys think ?

Same gun with some Ahrends, which feel a bit too skinny for me.

Not for me, thanks. Square butt Smiths just don't cut the mustard for me, much prefer a round butt with Pachmayr Compacs.

I like square butt. I have a couple of the Altamont "Roper style" round to square conversions installed. I happen to like the way they fit my hands. There is no unsightly gap either.

Leaves a very ugly unfinished look in my mind. It really seems to cheapen the appearance of a decent revolver.

If you have a round butted gun and want a square butt grip profile, either spend the bucks and get a purpose built set off stocks or make your own.

Only with something like the conversions mentioned.

I like round butt for carry and square butt for shooting and appearance. Why not just trade for a pair of round butt grips for that revolver. I am sure someone would jump at the chance. james

I voted no only because I think a day at the range with full .357 loads might start to get painful. I have no problem with the square grips but agree with others that they should be made for the conversion.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some would ignore the gap in the wood for the sake of utility. I can't believe that you don't like the Ahrends.... custom grips would seem to be the solution to your problem. You could try some sq. butt Pachmayrs. I dislike the look of black rubber, but the feel is good.

Altamont makes several versions of the grips that converts round butt to square butt. I have Altamonts on one of my revolvers and probably have more in the future. Really nice grip maker. james

My very first handgun was a 686 square butt with grips like this.

Guess I'm sentimental about it.

The Ahrands look close but feel too skinny.

These Hogues look and feel nice also.

I saw this on another gun forum.

Maybe the solution, is to hunt down another early 686

I have done the same thing with my 625. Might get some conversion grips one of these days, but not in a hurry. Works fine like it is

I put the Ahrends back on for now.

I may try to carve out a piece of wood to better contour the factory grips another time

30 years after the apocalypse, that might be acceptable. But not today.

I have a S&W 24-3 N frame in 44 special 3" barrel with the combat type grips. Round butt, while I've shot it a few times with the combat grips, I like the Ahrends round butt to square butt grips you had in your pics. Always felt that the combats were too fat, plus my fingers don't exactly match up with the finger cutouts. Which is kinda a shame as the combats fetch decent money on the market. I think I have a spare set of n frame square butt grips so maybe I'll try them out. Frank

Found these on ebay.

I like the look and feel, but they are too light in color.

They will look great with a bit darker stain on them.

I don't know if you've considered it, and I haven't seen anyone mention it, but you have plenty of wood to make the sq. butt grips into round butt grips if you like it being a round butt. Here's a photo of a 1917 Colt that was highly customized into a round butt, and the rosewood grips were modified to fit.

DG- that's a Big Belly gun- just one step away from a Fitz Special!
You have cool stuff.
I've got Hogue rubber grips- eww- on a round butt m10 that are square butt configuration. I haven't shot it enough yet to form much opinion on them.

Yes...it is different! When I was an FFL holder a fellow wanted me to get him an as-issued Colt 1917. I scoured Gunbroker and (at the time) Shotgun News, and elsewhere, and the only one I could turn up was almost completely silver with almost no finish at all, but otherwise in good condition. I told the customer about the 1917's condition, and that it was all I could find. He went for it, but wanted it reblued. No loss of value there, as there was no finish. So then, much to my surprise (as often happened), when it came time to pay up he presented me with this cut down version which was pretty much as you see it except that it was a square butt. Plus a little cash, of course. So while I was at it I reblued the one shown in the photo and turned it into a round butt. When it came time to try it out I was about to get rid of it, as it shot nothing at all well until I tried G.I. hardball. Got great results with that, so it hung around.

My favorite carry gun is a S&W 325 Air-lite with round butt.

Which I rotate with a pair of "J" frames wearing round butts too.

The round butt slips in my hands when I shoot. I bought a set of square butt plastic grips and checkered them all over. They are square butt grips on a round frame. The gap is ugly but the grips are functional.

derek, the new finish on those stocks really make that 686 look great. I would not try to alter the square butt stocks you have, they are valuable in this market as I'm sure you know after buying the RB ones on Ebay.
