View Full Version : Uberti 1876 in .45-60

I finally found an 1876, a used Uberti in .45-60. At first wanted a .50-95 or .45-75, but will probably use more smokeless loads than black, so I think the smaller cartridge will fit my needs better than the big ones. It is truly a beautiful rifle, I hope it shoots as good as it looks.

I have found very little info on .45-60 loads, does anyone have any favorites ? I have a Lyman 457191 mould, and also several moulds over 400 grains, which may be too heavy. I do have several powders which should be suitable, such as Unique, 5744, RL-7, IMR 4198 and 3031, and also good old black, if the smokeless doesn't well.

What works for you guys?

There’s 8 pages of load data for the 45-60 over on the CAS City 1876 forum (a lot of it smokeless data).

Give it a look, it should get you going in the right direction:

In the Lyman 49th Reloading Manual. Brian Pearce wrote a 8 page article on loading modern 1876 replicas. He lists his favorite modern smokeless loads for 50-95,45-75,45-60 and 40-60. It's a very good article. 45-60 was loaded from the factory with 300 grain bullets. In 45-75, 4198 works real well. No experience loading 45-60.

Hey G-G ,, the first thing ya' gon'a wan'a do is send me that tha'r poor 457191 mould , and get it out of the way ,, ( NOT !! ) , I am shooting the 457191 & 457122HP ,, depending on your bore I think you will also like the 191, as of now i'm working w/ RL-7 w/ .4 dacron filler & the 191 ,, but H-4198 has been great in both my 40-60 & 45-60 , you'll like the 45-60 , good shooting .

coffee's ready ,, Hootmix.

The Lee 340 mold beagled to 460 treats me well. 5744 powder. If you have access to the gould HP mold from Lyman that is a good weight and drops deer.

I got a 1876 Uberti but mine was in 50-95 , I would have took any of the calibers they are made in if the price was good , good find and have fun shooting it .

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd post my favorite load so far for my Cimarron 1876 Tom Horn.

First the obligatory gun porn...

Got the load from an article by Mike Venturino and worked up.

Bullet: GT Bullets 325gr FN (.459/GT Lube/Hornady GC/96-2-2)
Powder: AA 5744 24.0 grs.
Primer: Federal 210
Case: Starline Converted 45-70 Government
OAL: 2.230
Avg. Vel.: 1255 fps
ES: 19
SD: 7
Comments: Bullet looks like the RCBS 45-300FN Gas-Check.

I haven't quite got my rifle sighted in yet but this load shoots well and is accurate. These two groups were fired at 30 yards.

The 45 60 case is a 45 70 shortened about .2 inches. You should be good using starting loads for the trapdoor level 45 70.

I tried the RCBS 45-320-FN-U first but it didn't feed that well, accurate though.

I found out the other day that some of the problems with feeding were actually... me! I couldn't understand why some rounds were sliding into the chamber with ease - while others would hang up. Long story short I was not working the lever forward all the way! There is a definite point with the lifter where rounds tip up slightly and slide under the extractor. When short stroked (like I was doing) they end up IN FRONT of the extractor, that is hard on the extractor and it's much more difficult to close the action! D'Oh!

I picked up my new 45 60 yesterday. I already loaded some black powder rounds for it, using the 457191 mold and 6o grains of goex 2ff. The bullets drop at .460 so I'll try them at that size. I had one of these 45 60's back 12 or 14 years ago but had to sell it. It didn't shoot as well as I would have liked , but I was trying to shoot 405gr bullets at .458. I think the bullets were too heavy and sized too small. I have learned a lot since then. I also bought one in 50 95 a few weeks ago. Shooting 88gr black powder and a 325gr bullet sized to .313. Shoots great!

You bet! It's a wollup on both ends! But if you don't smile while shooting it there's something wrong with you!

It has arrived! So far looks really nice, except for the little scratch on the stock, which will get covered anyway. Time to start getting things together to make ammo. Of all my 45/70 brass i have, I only have 8 R-P shells not loaded, so I guess that's what I'll start with.

I'm glad someone got it that'll shoot it instead of look at it and willing to take it out and use it as it was intended to be used. I like the picture, let us know how it does. I've got one in 45-75 and one in 50-95, one of these days I'll get one in 45-60. Black powder out of those rifles is the way to go, at least that's what works for me.

I've got an Uberti .50-95. Its a beautiful rifle and shoots great. But I'm getting to the point where I enjoy smaller calibers more and have thought about selling it.
Here's a short video shooting it at the 100 yard gong line.

Nice! those 50-95 cartridges are pretty fat little buggers, and that rifle looks like alot of fun. Something about the '76...even though there are more advanced rifles out there...i still am interested in it!

I like the look of the short rifle best - I wouldnt choose a 45/60 but if you gonna shoot smokeless its the smart pick.

Well... that wasn't the problem after all! I was shooting some GT Bullets 325gr FN through my rifle and it wasn't feed reliably. Then (after all this time) I realized it was because I was working the lever with the muzzle pointing nearly straight up - when I worked the lever with the gun held horizontal it started feeding slicker than snail snot! D'Oh again!

I'll have to give those RCBS 45-320-FN-U bullets another try.

9 years ago I bought a .45-60 uberti NWMP 76 carbine. Lovely rifle. It had linkage issues with one side being out of spec. After a little work it chambers all my trimmed 45-70 brass. I used 292 gr rnfp lead in my reloads. Been years since I’ve shot it.
