I have this Berdan primed steel case 7.62x39 reload project I've been playing with for a Howa mini 1500 with 22" pencil barrel. The boolits are all powder coated Lyman #2 lead. Powder is Reloader 7. Primers are Fort Smith 7.62x39 Berdan. I'm using an MP311-410 in flat point and the shallower of the two available hollow points. Flatpoint is about 132grains. The hollow point is about 130grains. I'm also using the NOE311-150-SP (about 150grains) and the LeeCTL312-160-2R (about 160 grains). All have copper gas checks. All are hammering a round 8" steel plate at 200yds. That's the smallest plate and the longest distance my club has to offer.
The MP mold is running 2200fps+ while the Lee and NOE are running a little over 1600fps. So, my question and reason for this thread, How far are you shooting cast lead? What caliber? How far?

200 gr .30-40 at 200 yds for Silhouettes. roughly 1800 fps. Generally only 100 yds punching paper.

AR- 7.62x39, Noe 311-152-SP, wheel weights, gc, pc. Larry Gibsons loads with H4895
Have not checked velocity yet.
First round of working up loads.
Groups 1 to 11/4 at 50 yards.
Went to my 8x10 plate at 250 yds. Dont know about the group size but my Grandson shot last 10 rounds we had loaded without a miss.
Have some more loads worked up with quenched ww, different sizing, just need to shoot some more.
Grandson got married a week back, so he has been busy, this project was for his gun we were doing together.

1,240 yards.

I shoot cast bullets at an abandoned railroad tank laying on it's side by abandoned railroad tracks. It lases at 1,240 yards.

Best I know I have hit it once in about 300 tries. But my answer is still 1,240 yards.

I commonly shoot cast boolits at 200 yards from a .308, 300 Savage, 45-70 and 32 Special, sometimes going to 300 yards with the 308 and 300 Savage, occasionally longer. Off my bench, 1-2 MOA is not unusual, some days are just better than others, offhand and kneeling can be interesting, using standard 200, 300, and 600 yard High Power Match targets help. Walking back and forth can be time-consuming, I suppose I should use the UTV and shoot farther, but this is for fun on my home range. Have not spent tried the 35 Rem past 150 with boolits, same with 444. Cross winds are significant on my range, very noticeable past 200 yards, at lower velocities, velocity extreme spread becomes very apparent so careful load development and 'finding the node' becomes important. More scope magnification usually helps up to 14-16 power for me, the Law of Diminishing Returns kicks in.

Furthest I've shot lead is 300 yards. My club has a 300 yard range and I occasionally whack at a dinger from there. The dinger is the top(or bottom, both ring well) 1/3 of an oxygen cylinder. I buy them cheap at the local Hydro testing shop. A tank that fails hydro isn't worth much but scrap value.

Typical rifle of choice is an M1, but there have been others, Trapdoor in 50-70, a couple of Mausers and a few others.

And a Kimber in 22 LR. The 22 is probably the most fun just because of the lag time, although the 50-70's aren't that much faster.

250 yards with handguns.

Unfortunately, that gun leads severely because of the constriction of the barrel, where it threads into the frame. :/

250 is all I have to play with, however, for those seeking inspiration. . .

In the narrow window of about 15-20 years between the phase-out of the black powder single shots and the widespread distributions of jacketed spitzers, the early smokeless military magazine rifles had sights graduated out to 1500+ yards, and were shooting blunt-nosed bullets of about 200-220 grains at about 2000fps.

Sound like anything you are making at home? Given the nightmares cupro-nickel jackets were giving during those early days, we ought to be able to do AT LEAST as well. Only challenge is figuring out sight settings for pre-1910 flight profiles on sights that are calibrated for post-1910 ammo.

You guys are far better than me. I shoot pistols at 10 to 15 yards. I test rifle loads at 25 yards at the indoor range and once I find a promising load, I take them to a friends place to go out to 100-130 yards. Loads are for .223 and .270 for the rifles. I haven't gotten my 30-30 out there yet, but then again im not great with open sights even if they are Skinner's.

The .45-70 PPB BP cartridge can reach waaaaaaaaaaay out there. Common for me is 200-300 yards, but those are just the short distances. I'd like a crack at one mile, though ... ;)

To "terminal performance" in/through hogs and deer, so 10 yards to 150 (+/-) yards.

I only have 100 yards at my house, now. On our farm, 500 yards was about a daily thing, rifle and revolver, smokeless and BP. Had friends who had a BIG farm and we could get 1,000 yards there, from one ridge to another. There we only shot rifles, smokeless and BP. Sure miss those days.

Forgot about skip counting. Probably 400-500 yards.

When I was a kid, it was 3/4 of a mile across my dad's and my uncle's farm plus another 1/2 mile to the nearest house. In the those days most fields were fall plowed so it was bare dirt.

Perfect for taking out the 22 on dry days and picking out a dirt clod sticking up and pop at it with the Glenfield.

Then count the skips. Most was 5. Further out you shot the more skips. 3 was virtually every shot. 4 probably 1 in ten, 5 almost never.

Sold the last of the farm this past winter. No more skip shooting. Haven't been able to do it for a number of years, no-till/minimum till leaves too much trash on the surface. Good for the ground, not so good for skip shooting.

I miss sky shooting too.

22 LR shot at about 10° off vertical into a blue sky was cool, with a scope you could see the bullet for a surprisingly long time and surprisingly sharp view of the bullet in the beginning of the flight.

With the block I lived being a mile and a quarter East to West and a mile and a half North to South, of all farm ground and woods I wasn't too worried about it not hitting dirt on the way back down.

22 caliber slug fall at the speed gravity would bring it down wouldn't do any damage unless you were looking straight up and it caught you straight in the eye.

Hatcher proved that back in the 20's.

Although, in the days of yore, none of that kind of analysis even entered my mind.

It was fun to do and there was A WHOLE BUNCH of open dirt for the bullet to land in.

At home I am limited to a hundred yards , but if I run up to the farm I have a 350 yard range with a large back stop . Most of my cast boolits are shot out of handguns in the 15 -50 yard range , & long guns at a 100 .

Got a 6" gong that I put out at 50 yards and shoot my revolvers at. Should put one out at 100 for my .308 and 30-30.

Pistol out to 35 yards for determined work. I'll chase a gong at 120 yards plinking with the same handguns. For rifle out to 100 yards using a glass equipped Longbranch and a Marlin 30-30. Success is measured in three rounds, all touching at that distance. The Marlin sometimes the Longbranch daily. Those girls in Toronto, back in the day, knew how to build a rifle for their men.

IHMSA Handgun Silhouette. Handguns in 7TCU and 7BR, both using the RCBS 7mm 145 Silhouette bullet. Distances from 50-200 yards. I have engaged the silhouette chicken target at 300 yards and can occasionally hit that with iron sights. I use Hardball alloy and Felix lube.

I shoot my Winchester High Wall 38-55 out to 100 yards for accuracy and out to 300 for fun. At 100, 1.5" groups are the norm. 200, I seem to hover around 4-5". At 300 my groups get to about 8" but I'm still learning this gun and what it likes. I'm coming close but don't have powder to really mess with it till the shortages end.

I was feeling good about my cast boolit shooting having my 9.3 x 62mm Mauser with an Accurate 37-285C pushed by H4895 cast with Lyman#2 alloy shooting paper at 200 yards, and 45/70 shooting 200 yard with a NOE 405-460 boolit cast from COWW
I guess I will keep punching hole in my 8" target and enjoying it, what few times I get to a 1600 meter range I want some thing like my 338 Lampa pushing j-words

I shot quite a bit of .308W and 30-06 at 500 and 600 yards on the old 5V targets years back out of M1903A1 and M1903A3s along with the occasional M1917, SMLE and MN rifles. Mostly used 311/314299s pushed along by 4895 to 1900 fps +/-.

On my "walk abouts" in the desert here I've been know to stretch the distance with my M1903A1 match rifle out to 1200 yards on a pile of rocks I staked in a long wash. Also shoot the H&R OM TD 45-70 and M1884 target rifle out to the same distance.

With the iron sights on the above rifles there was enough sight adjustment. Problem with most scoped rifles is having enough elevation adjustment or being able to use a spot "above" the target to compensate for the drop of the cast bullets.

I have shot the 30x60 XCB rifle at 600 yards for group. Bullet was the 30 XCB (NOE 310-165-FN) over 53 gr AA4350 for 2900 fps. One morning before the wind got too bad i shot two 10 shot groups and one 11 shot group. The average for the three groups was right at 1.5 moa. Here is the smallest group, the 11 shot group which was right at 5.9";

300 meters with the 32-20 but that was with the stock ladder sight. Haven't tried with the Marbles tang yet. My furthest cast pistol shots have been at 40 yards with a frosted bore Colt 1903 (and sometimes a Kel Tec P32) running the RCBS 32-77 RN over 2.2 gr. W231.

I shoot at a wonderful range here in Central Oregon which has targets as far as I can see. My BPCR group shoots regularly to 1000 yards and occasionally to 1200 yards which is pretty normal shooting for the big buffalo guns. But this next shoot we are going to try something more challenging and do a "mini-Quigley" where we shoot pistol-caliber cartridges (from levers or single-shots) using our mid-range course of 300 to 600 yards. Should be interesting! I'm going out today to get some sight settings for the event.

I sort a lyman 314299 to collect match bullets and load them up for hunting and can get 1 inch groups at 80 yards. they are moving about 1800+-. I shoot all my deer in the head and never miss. the woods I hunt in is very thick on cape sable island, but we have too many deer at the moment and they are becoming a problem with many road kills.
