Hello Friends:

From my last post, looking for mold suggestions for the 06 Garand,
Lyman 311299 was suggested loaded with 4895.:awesome:

My Lyman 49th edition lists the 311299 but does not show
IMR or H 4895 as a powder choice.

I have plenty of H4895 and would appreciate suggestions
on a charge starting point for the 311299 to be used
in the Garand.

Thanks
Paul

The Lyman #3 Cast Bullet Handbook is online at a number of places as a free download.

I'd start out at around 30 grains H4895, and work up until you get 100% functioning. I use 34 grains in my Garand. It functions 100% and is an accurate load.

I use IMR4895 in my Garand.
My rifle has 100% function with 32 gr IMR 4895 or IMR 4064 and 1 gr dacron.
This load works well with bullets in the 170-200+ grs.
I tis as accurate as M2 ball in my rifle.

Very good article by Brian Pearce in this month’s Handloader on M1 Garland loads. Noticed that Varget and 4895 were two of his favorite powders.

Thanks for the heads up. Hope mine shows up in todays mail.
Been a Handloader subscriber for years. Think I have all the issues.

primerheadYou’re welcome. Handloader, Handgunner (which I have not gotten in yet), and Shooting Times are my favorite gun mags.

Amending my prior statement: American Handgunner was in the mailbox this afternoon.

I will be interested if the OP can get a full en bloc clip of 311299
cartridges to fit into the magazine well ...w/o binding.

Hello Friends and Happy 4th;

mehavey:
Will be casting a few 311299 and will advise concerning binding en bloc.
What was your brass trim length?
What was your cartridge overall length after seating the 311299?
I need these measurements to duplicate your loads en bloc fitment in order to check for
binding in my Garand.

Thanks

There is another way to go with Garands and Cast Boolits. I have shot NM with my Garand and used 16 gr of 2400 behind the 311299. It won't run the action but in Slow fire you don't need to, and many guys use a SLED. (Single Loading Device.) Single loading is viable when you've got time.

The 16 gr o 2400 load has been around for eons and is very accurate in most rifles. Make sure to crimp it for best results.

My Garands do extremely well with the Lee .311” 200gr RNGC. Cast from WW w/95/5 solder added and lubed with SPG over 34.5gr of H4895. Gets 2,050fps. Seated to crimp groove and lightly crimped with a Lee FCD.

For plinking or mad minute drills, I prefer the Lee 160gr .311” Ptd GC. I cast them with a 6-cav mold that practically “rains” bullets. I PC. Them with Harbor Freight PC (shake n bake method). Load them over same load of H4895. Cycles the action.

Was able to get a full clip of 311299 into the Garand no problem.
Started out with 29g of H4895 not enough had to increase to 34g
to get reliable function,

I remember a thread from long ago, by a member using the handle "Bob S", where he used a heavy cast bullet in his Garand, powered by MilSurp 4831. I have been looking for it, but have not found it yet.
Edit: Found one of his threads: https://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?27055-M1-Garand-loads&highlight=Garand

Here is a link suggesting what you are already looking at, a clone of the 311284 and 4895:
