As far as I can determine, the heaviest factory slug cartridge available for non-rifled 20 gauge 3-inch barrels is Brenneke's 1-ounce rifled slug @ 1425 fps, give or take.

1. With 4x telescopic sight mounted and 20 gauge shot from a bench shooting Brenneke's cartridge, what would be the longest range an average shooter can consistently hit anywhere within a standard sized playing card?

2. For non-rifled 20 gauge 3-inch barrels, is more effective factory ammunition than Brenneke's 1-ounce rifled slug available?

Back when I hunted deer with a Rem 870 20 ga, back before they had rifled barrels.

If you could keep 3 slugs in the middle of a paper plate at 50 you were good to go.

#1 you are going to have to answer yourself, with your gun, your scope, your hands. Any other answer may not be the same as yours.

#2 I don't think so, not for factory loads. Stick with what works. Find your limitations, hunt within them.

Good luck.

A three inch barrel on a twenty gauge is one heck of a sawed off shorty.
Would not want to be around that muzzle blast.
