45 acp primer question

First off, I’m not sure this question belongs here, but here goes.
Is there an advantage or disadvantage to spp in a 45 acp ? Both spp and lpp are listed for this case and that caused me to wonder.

The only advantage I can see is being able to use whichever size primer you have the most of right now since replacing them is difficult.

a while back some companies made spp 45 and for most relaoders it was a pita.

In practice.. either work.. but I tend to prefer large primers in large cases.. even if the case volume is or isn't filled.

The small primer pocket results in a stronger case if you are going to load above factory specs for a Ruger revolver or .45 Super.

I read somewhere that SPP were cleaner for indoor shooting

I use SP, SR, LP or LR depending on what I shootings. Also use Star 45 plus P brass in revolvers.

With the understanding that my research and memory are not exhaustive, I believe spp 45acp were developed to use the "green" primers. Many reloaders, 'specially those using progressive presses, find them a pita. Generally side by side tests do not disclose significant differences.
As mentioned, primer availability, and special applications may warrant their use.

I have both and always gravitate to the large. Just easier to work with. Just save yourself some hassle and don't shoot large and small together to avoid the extra sorting. Drives me nuts and I inevitably miss a few and crush primers in the press if I'm not careful.

Recently I’ve been loading both spp and LPP in 45acp, testing both over chronograph. All being same powder 4.8 gr bullseye, cast boolits 200 gr. same CZ97 pistol run around 850 fps. Only difference was using LPP magnum jumped about 75 - 100 fps. So you might want to cut powder some with magnum primers.

Biggest advantage is not having to change the primer system on the press. Biggest disadvantage is sorting them out.

Some time back, match target shooters claimed better accuracy with SPP. Something about less bullet jump due to the primer before the powder fully ignites.
I can't confirm or deny this. I am not a good enough shot to tell if there is a difference in accuracy.

I don’t know about any advantages, but I convert the spp cases for my .400 Corbon.

I have used both, and I can’t see any difference. Just be sure to separate them before you start loading..

I shot 45 acp with large primers for about 30 years. About 10 years ago I got three five gallon buckets of 45acp small primer brass for nearly free. I shot all the old rounds and left those at the range. I only use the spp brass now and that works great for me.
