Hi all. In the GMDR low level data section there is info for red dot and 170 weight cast Bullets but it’s for a 3006. I don’t own one ......they list red dot from 6-10 grains giving between 1000 and 1400 FPS .....how would I go about deciding on some red dot loads if I sought 1200 FPS loads in my 20 inch barrelled howa 308?

I've never used Red Dot but from my .308 experience with 2400/4198 at 1500-1800 fps. I suspect that the .308 would take the '06 loads just fine.

Mine likes the Lee 312-155-2R and the Lee 309-200-R pretty well. I'm trying some slower powders to see if I can get good accuracy and 2,000 fps. RL10x, H-322, A2015 and 4198.

I use the .30-30 data when loading for my .308. Muzzle velocities come very close to what GMDR shows. I shoot 165 gas checked and 170gn plain base bullets using their data. Blue Dot, Tite Group and 700x have all performed consistent with the data, including the accuracy shown on the website.

For your 1,200 fps with Red Dot 8 grains will get you pretty close.
Good Luck,

Take those 170 grain cast boolits and seat them over 13.0 grains of Red Dot .
Do a search on the term - " The Load" by C.E. Harris ... and read the article ...lots of good info in this one ... might want to print it out for future reference ... I have .

In the 308 start with 12.0 grains and work up to 13.0 gr. , check accuracy and leading as you go .
This is not powder puff loads .
I load 13.0 gr. Red Dot - 170 gr. FP - in a 30-06 and it's a winner in my 1903-A3 Springfield .

Granted these are only at 50 yards, but you get the idea, right?

A really good day with Blue Dot and the Lee 180gn bullet, powder coated.

Was adjusting the scope.

286816

'Normal' group sizes were 1.5-2" at 100yd.

FYI, that centered group was at an elevation setting that is ~10" higher than jacketed loads and 6" higher than my 'normal' cast loads. Velocity was just a bit under 1200fps.

One of my 308's loves Red Dot and a load of about 9 gr with a 196 gr plain base boolit. That rifle has a 16" barrel. Another of my 308's with the same twist but a 22" barrel does not like Red Dot at all preferring 2400 or sometimes RE-7 with some boolits. Every barrel has a personality that is yours to discover. Have fun!
