Intresting observation 9mm

Been wringing out a new 9mm.
2 of its most accurate loads are 3.4grs 700x,and 7.4 grs of #7.both these loads use the same powder measure setting,they both are within 30fps,of each other,take up about the same case capacity,,,both of these loads are most accurate,with the mp 275 copy boolit.
Almost same exact load,,4grs difference in powder,,hmm makes my brain hurt.

If you had Quickload, you could compare peak pressure and muzzle pressure. It's common for loads with similar muzzle pressures to exhibit similar accuracy.

Powder density ...700X is a flake powder , light and fluffy like Bullseye and Unique .
Accurate powders are dense and heavy , spherical ball like powders .
A 5cc Lee dipper will dip : using my method of dipping
700X - 4.0 grs.
AA#5 - 7.7 grs. ( I don't have any AA#7 so used #5)
Same 5 cc volume but spherical and flake differences are 3.7 grs. in weight .
Think of it as a cup full of feathers and a cup full of lead shot ...it's just a density thing ...

I'd be using 700x since less powder-almost identical velocity. They pretty far apart on the burn rate chart though. Speaking of "Quickload", never had it, was fixing to buy but it's like 150.00. Probably worth it but couldn't chance not finding any 6.5 CM loads for cast. That is pretty interesting with your load!

Gave some 700X to a Friend to try in Cowboy Loads 25yrs ago.
He Will Not use anything else in .45Colt

I have also been using 700x for 9mm. Using the lee 124tc mold. Cant remember the exact charge, but it is in the 3.4~ range. Very accurate and clean with no chance to double charge without making a mess.

Also a nice cheap powder that lasts a long time with such a light charge.

Red Dot is a long-favored powder for 45ACP. I suspect it will work well in any short semiauto cartridge. There is a theoretical advantage to using shotgun powders in handguns. Shotgun loads are designed to burn at low pressure, so should burn cleaner in handguns. I keep reading complaints about unburned 2400 (good in 12 gauge loads) and Unique (works for many 20 gauge loads) in handguns. I once scraped the 2400 residue from a range tabletop after some SBH shooting and tried to light the "unburned powder" with a Bic lighter. It didn't burn, it was ashes.

Muzzle velocities being equal, the faster powder will produce higher peak pressure than the slower one. Given the modern guns are plenty strong enough to handle it, this fact is irrelevant, but the older, weaker ones this should be a consideration.

The reason I started looking at other powders was the recurring shortages .
I was perfectly happy with Bullseye and Unique ... then 2013 it went away .
So I started trying things I had never used but was able to get .... 700X , Red Dot , W231 , HP-38 , AA #5 , AA #2 and Titegroup ... had to work with whatever was available ...even had to use some Alcan No.5 I had squirreled away on the back upper shelf ... that's when you know you getting hard up for handgun powder .
If I could just find Bullseye & Unique all the time ... I would be happy-happy :happy dance:

Was shooting a primer test today,,10 shot groups,,noticed the point of impact,was pretty much exact between the 2 loads.been loading for a lot of years,but dont recall a example quite like this!!btw,,fed primers shoot smaller groups,clearly.

Also,,gun is about 100 f.p s,,faster then book,,must be the 10 inch twist?

3.6gr of 700-X is my standard load in 9mm. I’ve probably shot over 10,000 rounds in several 124gr bullet styles in several different guns and it always performs great.

Unique is very accurate powder as well,,3.9 grs,,,shoots the best,,you guessed it..... same volume as 700,and 7 loads....

700X is a great powder, almost as versatile as Unique.

Gun will shoot tiny 10 shot groups with any of the 4 powders..tite group dont follow the same volume situation, like the others,,but 2.5 grs@does 900 fps,,and shoots very small.
