Looking for a container

I need to store the pilots for my case trimmer in ANY more organized way, I think a metal can akin to an Altoids tin (only about 1.5-2x larger) should be ideal, so something like 4" x 6" x 2" tall? Worst case I can 3D print it, just would prefer metal for the case. Then I'll do an insert with legend.

Before the latest computer's hard drive died I had found a place that sells them for decent numbers, right now I am still trying to get an OS onto my computer though. Can't pull computers up by their own shoestrings very easily, particularly when your computer fixing tools are loaned out. Getting them back soon. Then I can rejuvenate all 3 machines.

I have 2 trimmers, each mounted on a piece of 1"x6". I just drilled a series of holes in the boards to fit the pilot's shanks. The pilots are stored in the holes and stay with the trimmer. Its not fancy, but works just fine. No need for a seperate storage container.

I know you said you prefer metal but if you would consider plastic, check your local craft store or dollar store.

daily pill containers may fit the bill. One that holds a weeks worth morning and night. 14 separate compartments for pilots and other small parts.

I had thought of those, lots to be said for some of them.

When you have cats, trust me, you want small things locked away from bored curious paws, my older cat one day discovered a coffee mug full of change I had on the bed's headboard, fish fish with a paw, coin falls to the floor, I complain at her, she maintains eye contact and fishes the rest out of there LOL She is a stubborn lil cuss.

I store most everything in zippered containers, or tins that keep lil paws out.

And I try to play with the critters enough that they don't get bored

only a closed old G.I. metal ammo box can keep a cat away from playing with something.
inside it you can keep the trimmer and all the tiny accessories, organized in the daily pill container-14 separated compartments of above...

I have lots of loose misc . I bought 8 of the 8×10×1 tackle boxes to consolidate all of the trimmer parts , shell holders , spare die parts etc . It was a boon to me to have it all sorted out and organized .

Plan is to 3D print a piece with holes for the pilots' stens, and with text labels, to help organize, shoukd work quite well. Sometimes people ask for a specific thing for a reason :)

I use a scrap piece of 1x4 with 1/4" holes drilled in it. I just write the punch number in front of the hole.

I have a 2x4 with holes also and keep in a drawer my lube sizer.

I have a vintage yellow plastic bullet box that I use for Pilots.
This box dates back to 1990s, and the box held 50 cal lubed TC Maxi-balls.
The compartments are the perfect size for pilots.
I guess they still sell 'em...

Another commercial box that could be recycled for this purpose is the one that Hodgdon's triple 7 50/50 pellets come in, I think I have one of those in the Misc box O junk in the corner of my reloading room ;)

If you don't appreciate 'em, thats on you. Puppies chew everything, cats get bored, and find playthings, kids get into everything, it's the nature of pets and kids... I wouldn't want a pet that wasn't smart, they are more fun.

I bought a bunch of these at Dollar General. They are made for cream cheese blocks. If you were to cut your block of wood to fit the box and place some sort of rubber band or the like around it, they should be pretty much cat proof.

PS, they work real well for 9 mm boxes also if you save the plastic insert the the bullets come in from the factory.

I was thinking they were no longer available and knowing it's over 20 years old (a common thing in my world, is things 20+ years old and no longer available is antique, vintage, or collectable) I just added that word...and I know it way over used on fleabay...I suppose I over use it too :razz:

Now that this computer is actually working, I can have a computer talk to the printer, bit more to do still but at least I have ONE machine up. It's been insane here without any machines but the cell phone of last resort...

I made a board for mine as well as my sizing dies and nose punches. Problems with an indoor cat is never something I'll have to be concerned with.....or an outdoor cat.

Our cats are forbidden to come into my shop, so I can keep my pilots in the holes provided in back of the trimmer. In the house the cats don’t paw at things to make them fall, they just walk beside stuff and push it off. Maybe we just have clumsy cats.

You can use these. I use a similar product to hold all my sizing top punches. Or you can go to a local fabric store an see if they have some bobbin holder cases.

I store my sizing dies in 35mm film containers. I have a plastic box than industrial bits came in that is perfect to store them in. I cut a piece of walnut that is drilled to accept top punches that also fits in same box.

I have a plastic shotgun choke tube container. It has three compartments in it. It is about 4" x3" x11/4".

I found a plastic container that's about 2x too large but will do, I'll figure out what to use the rest of its' space for later. Closing thread as it's handled.
