Team.

Sorry in advace. I know I have seen this mentioned somewhere but I can't find the thread.

For my right hand twist barrel how should I wrap?

I am presently wrapping with the bullet facing right. I lay the patch on so that the longest edge is at the top of the bullet and wrap anti clockwise.

Anyone got photos to demonstrate?

Jeff:

Once again, I am no expert here but I was originally told that the direction of wrap should match the direction of twist so that the rotation of the rifling tends to tighten the patch and then on leaving the barrel the twist in the air tends to unwrap the patch.

So, for right hand twist you would wrap with paper away from you and boolit nose to the right.

In reality, I doubt it matters as the paper shreds anyway.

Here is a basic outline for paper patching:

http://www.lrml.org/technical/ammunition/patching.htm

By my definition he is wrapping for right hand twist.

Also here is RCE's paper patching book which has good info:

http://rceco.com/img/RSBook4.PDF

And Brent Danielson's site:

http://www.public.iastate.edu/~jessie/PPB/PPB.htm

Should be enough info there to get you going or totally confuse you!

What little paper patching I do, I wrap for the twist as described then twist the tails, dry, then cut them off. It has worked pretty well so far though I am no competition shooter.

Consistency is probably the most important aspect.

Also, rule of thumb is for BP boolit is under bore diameter and finished patch is at or just over bore diameter and for smokeless, boolit is about bore diameter and patched to groove diameter.

I'm sure there will be lots of responses as this seems like a hot topic at present. Others may agree or disagree but that's what I have to share.

Good luck and good shooting!

Hah! I hadn't even noticed, Brent's link is a sticky on the first page so you have likely already looked. Oh well, better too much info than not enough eh?

Jeff, when I first started, I wrapped them upside down! I started at the base.
No, no, no!!
Make sure you start at the tip. Which ever way you wrap, at the tip!
I have no idea why I could not figuire it on my own, but I had to see some photos from the members here. There is one somewhere of a patch starting on a casting.
Like duh!!!!
Once I did it that way, I got results.

Sometimes the direction of twist will make a difference. It is something that you can change when you are having the feeling that the groups could be just a little better. I have never seen it make a big difference but that could just be my ignorance in action.
The phrase "Wow That didn't work out like I planned did it? Let's clean up this mess and try something else." Seems to flow off my tongue with a certain rhythm.
