On a recent trip I met up with a gentleman selling some moulds and for a nice price this one followed me home. I didn’t have any access to my references and though it was the same as my current SWC (-429) mould. When I got home and went after some load data things came to a halt. It’s definitely not a 358495.

The top part is close to a 358429 (middle)but a bit heavier, the base seems to be similar to the 358311 (right). The bullet weight is somewhere about 175g or so.

I’m wondering if it’s some sort of second, or an error on the machining floor that made it out the door. It does not seem to be modified in any way.

Got a bunch cast so I’ll load them up in my trusty .38 and see what happens

Looks like a later rendition of 358429, but with an inattentive stamp operator marking the mould

Tim I would almost agree, except I failed to mention it came with a correspondingly marked orange cardboard box and old style instruction sheet and the lube groove is all wrong.

Definitely a stamping error

Lyman did produce the 358429 with a round bottom lube groove. I don't know when, but they did for a while. They made some other changes over the years. Some good, some not so much. Let us know how it shoots.

This shows what the 358495 should look like.
Lyman changed cherries often but yours molds nose is quite long to call it a 495. What does it weigh?

This 358429 with round lube groove was bought new around 1980.

Maybe someone modified a wad cutter mold and put the SWC nose on it . Looks well done and heavy.

NEKVT Do you happen to have any of those cast? The one I have is dropping a bullet OAL of .752. By comparison my -429 has a bullet OAL of .739. There is enough differences that I don’t want to call them the same and load them interchangeably in the same box.

On the good side the mutt drops at .360 and sizes up real nice.

MT check my post the requested details are there

frkelly where the lube grooves align from what was supposed to be the wadcutter would be obvious if moved or machined over. No signs of any modifications

I have one sample cast a long time ago I keep in my 357 die box. It measures .743.
