I'm looking at a couple ford 450's a 2009 and a 2010 both with the 6.0 liter engine in them and was wondering if anyone might have experience with these engines.

I am sitting beside my BIL who has a 2010 450 as a ranch truck. He says that he had issues with the head gasket twice - then took it to be worked on / upgraded (the studs were upgraded as well). Says it's one of the best trucks he's ever owned now - 200k+ on it, gets used hard.

Edit: that's saying a lot as he's a dyed in the wool GM guy.

Must be E450's, 6.0's were only in F450's till 07. E450 is a bear to work on.

There is no such thing as bulletproofing a 6.0. Monitor the temps and pressures, swap the Ford Gold coolant for a good ELC and stay away from the aftermarket tuning.

My 2003 6.0 has 240k miles and is still on the original head bolts, no studs. I monitor oil and water temp, fuel pressure, oil pressure and boost. The biggest issue with the 6.0 is finding someone that knows how to work on it if you can't do it yourself. I do all the work on mine. The 6.0 is relatively easy to work on in the F series, not so much on the E series.

the engine in 2008-2010 was the 6.4 liter and a real pain period the 6.0 liter ended with the 2007 model

I believe both engines were offered in the 09 and 10. Then discontinued in 11

they are e450 work vans, I'm looking at and can imagine they are a bear to work on without dropping engine out. both have about 130000 miles and were fleet maintained. the price is real right and basically the current price is about what a new set of tires would cost and both have 6 new tires on em.

I worked as a mechanic in a ford dealer ship for servile years, the 6.0 was a good motor there was a fleet of 6 belonging to a tow company here in town they all went over 600,000 miles and no major repairs to any of them, the owned did get to complaining about maintenance cost was to high. he refused to pay a bill and I refused to work on them.

130k isn't even broken in, I bought mine in 2012 with 150k. If they were fleet maintained it's probably a safe bet. Fixing what the butcher mechanics did is half the battle. It's a good engine.

What others said. If maintained and not chipped up will run forever. Seen so many in Ford dealerships I worked at with engines "busted up". Claimed chips let them run a little better and get better fuel mileage. Stock ones will haul anything and burn the tires off of the truck.

I seen that most of the time a block was damaged gas or diesel that a tuner or chip was involved, I learned early about this and expatiation came in with a injector hung open and cylinder washed out, I replaced the motor under warranty, did what I thought was up date the pcm that give me fits during diagnostic, which in reality I reprogramed the tuner . the customer came back quickly complaining about her tuner did not work, I was shown it the computer has trouble connecting look for a tuner, she was told to take her free motor that should not have been free and shut up.

I have a 04 F450 with the 6.0 and a manual transmission. With 130K miles it's been a good truck. No chip, EGR delete and swapped out the oil cooler. At work we used to have 6.4 diesel F250s. The emission systems would cause trouble, the guys that beat on them seemed to have better luck. A guy at a shop said the first thing they'd do once the customer left is hold the pedal to the floor for a bit and sometimes that's all it needed.

I have a 2003 F350 with a 6.0L with 355,000 miles. After about 125,000 miles it got expensive. I probably should have pulled the engine and replaced it with a certain old cummins that will apparently fit. After about 250,000 I have only had it in the shop once for engine problems, manual transmission at about 300,000. Always use FORD fuel injectors. EGR delete, oil cooler. I have not had head gasket problems. Replaced fuel injectors twice, high pressure oil pump. Needs glow plugs now. It has plenty of power, no chip for me. My 7.3 l has a chip and is a better motor.
