4570 reduced loads with re7 powder

I have cast lead projectiles 300/350 /405 and 500. I’m after quieter loads I have trailboss unique bullseye ...I’m doing some experimenting to find a consistent accurate load. I. Must have seen some data on the net with re7. Otherwise I would not have purchased it. But now on the weekend I have some time to do some reloading but after a lot of looking on the net I’m buggered if I can find anything other than fast full power loads with this powder ...can anyone point me in the right direction please ?

I am testing RL-7 in my 45-60 w/ 343gr. cast ( 457122HP ),will be glad to share info. , but so far H-4198 is working the best. I " DON'T shoot hot loads ".
Look for 45-70 info. in Lyman 49th. addition.( for rifle powders ).

The latest Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook #4 lists Reloader 7 for similar weights to the ones you list. You don't say what you are shooting these in but since you are looking for quieter I'm assuming that you want reduced loads. Looking at the listings for the lower Trapdoor loadings the only weight with a starting load that is somewhat reduced is for the 500gr with 30.0gr at 1119fps 11100 CUP from a 24" barrel.

Some other starting loads listed for Reloader7 also 24" barrel:
292gr 50.0gr 1779fps 11900 CUP
330gr 40.0gr 1633fps 14600 CUP
405gr 37.0gr 1534fps 16400 CUP

The level these starting loads are at is because this powder may not give consistent burning if loaded lower then these recommended starting loads. This Lyman edition doesn't list any fast burning powders for 45-70 with the fastest being SR-4759 although many have had excellent results with Unique in this cartridge.

If you want "quieter loads " you'll be better served with tralboss, unique or bullseye. Muzzle blast is function of gas volume, exit pressure and gas velocity. By the time you get RL7 burning efficiently with any of those bullets you'll have a lot more of all three which means more noise.

I seldom shoot .45-70 anymore but have tried a variety of bullets and powders in four or five rifles over the years. My remaining .45-70s are a Ruger and a Shiloh Sharps.

None of my loads have been hot; a 420 grain bullet at 1,300 - 1,400 fps is about as warm as I ever loaded and most loads were milder. Reloder 7 was almost always secondary from an accuracy perspective. 4759, 5744, and IMR4198 were generally better powders. I've never tried the faster pistol and shotgun powders.

The Lyman Reloading Handbook #45 from 1970 does have Reloader7 loads at a lower level for 300gr and 405gr JACKETED bullets.

All from a 32.5" Springfield.
300gr starting load 33.0gr 1408 fps, max 38.0gr 1639 fps
405gr starting load 29.0gr 1211fps, max 34.0gr 1390fps

It only lists Unique, 2400 and IMR 4227 for the three cast bullet weights.

The only bullets I ever stuck in the bore of my Browning SRC were powered with RL-7. It had never lived up to its hype for me, in the .45-70 Govt., .35 Rem or .30-30.

I shoot a NEF 45-70 and love the load I got from a friend that shot cowboy stakes comp with it. 405 gr cast with 36 gr 3031. I found it groups well out to 200 yards. Wallacem

I’ve tried every powder you can think of in my 45-70’s (several of them). If you’re looking for very light loads that have consistency, use Unique. Soft, accurate, and lots of shots per pound.
If you were in NY, I’d give you most of a pound of Trailboss powder to try. No offense to your internet handle, but I hate Trailboss powder. I simply don’t see the attraction to it. Everything works better.
