I just take a 50-70 case and trim it down with a small pipe cutter so that it just chambers.

Which would be about 1.5" according to Cartridges of the World.

I think MidwayUSA has a video on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-eA-L-NfOo

Google the .50-45 cartridge for some info.

You might try shortening some 50 Alaskan brass.

My carbine came with 20 rounds of ammo loaded as follows:

Dixie Gun Works 50-70 brass trimmed to: 1.340" - 1.350"

Unknown primer

42 grains of FG black powder

425 grain cast bullet .515 diameter unknown lube; may be NRA 50-50

1.950 overall length

They shot quite well.

As for smokeless I would try TrailBoss as per the instructions for its use.

I trim .50-70 to 1.355", load with 43gr Goex 2F and a Rapine 350 bullet. The gives an average velocity of 1083fps in my carbine.

I had to weld up and re-machine the extractor stud on mine. Here is a short video of me shooting it after the repair.

I am not sure that the extractor will ketch the AKASKEN CASE HEAD? don't have one to try.

I just measured a 50 Alaskan rim. It is about .604". 50-45 should be .650". I doubt you will get good extraction withe the alaskan. The stud extractor on these is minimal at best.

I just made two of them. I had a 348,WIN, case that was split and an 8M/M, LEBEL case that was split. pulled them out of the brass trash can and studied them, they looked like that they might work, so I cut then back with a DREMEL TOOL, to the correct legenth, annealed the case mouths and opened the case mouth in a 50/70, expander die. the splits on both stopped well above the legenth that I needed, put in 25 grs of 2FG, a cookie wad and thumb inserted a .515, cast lead bullet. held it up in the air muzzle to the sky and both fire formed just fine, took them back and did it again, and VIOLA, the job is complete. so I hope that this helps some one who wants to make them from scrap brass or just 348's or 8M/M LEBELS, that are a whole lot cheaper than cutting up a 50/70.

If you do some investigating the parent case of the 50 Alaskan was the 348 Winchester.
So strange to have the parent be different in respect to rim diameter. I can see different aspects in length or shoulder if case has one but different rim measurement I find unusual.
