I am not defending or attacking any of the cartridges that are listed in this article but some of them aren’t going anywhere any time soon and it’s funny to me that they think so.

Wife actually sent me this and asked if they meant the same cartridge as her gun (40SW which many people we know love). She than asked if it was so true, why do I keep being able to order different 40 mold designs?[emoji1787]

I can kinda see GAP and 41 magnum but 32 also seems like it has a niche market but maybe I’m wrong? My 1903 is a joy to shoot but admittedly ammo is hard to come by around here for it.

They recycle that topic incessantly, guy just had a deadline so slopped something together.

All are popular enough to last except the .45 Gap- it died quicker than the .41 Action Express and slower than the 9mm Federal rimmed.

I read that crap, article while I was eating. I wanted to laugh but knew the wife wouldn't get the joke.

.45 Gap is about the same as .357 Sig. who has one or several.

.32 H&R Magnum or .41 magnum? Big difference between those rounds as to how many people have them.

Those are the same sort of articles that will tell you your trusty 30-06 is outdated and you need to get a new 300 ultra to shoot whitetail with.

Didn’t read the article, but it does seem that 40s&w is indeed in rapid decline. Bunch of guns in circulation though, so it’ll be around a while.

This is crap "journalism", intended only to gather clicks.

I mean, I start the same kinda threads here, but only because I like to see the fights in the comments [emoji14]

...man, the 30-30 is really outdated, why would anybody still use that cartridge??

I used to subscribe to F&S just to read Bill Heavy on the last page, then sort of got away from it.

Most of the rest of the magazine is right up there with what I call 'the gun comic books'.

Field and Stream.........I don't bother looking at it. They had an article in cutting /processing meat a while back. Vivid pictures showing plenty of hair on the meat. The editor was absent that day.

I work in the ammunition industry. The 9mm absolutely crushes everything! Other cartridges may not be as popular but I believe they will hang in there. The only thing that could kill all those cartridges are the democrats

Having watched and owning some of the "new weird and wonderful" one thing Ive noticed is certain cartridges seem to come and go. 38 super and 10mm come to mind. These 2 seem to go thru streaks where everyone has to have one then die down.

A with a big supply of Beretta 81 and 81BB guns imported from Italy at very reasonable prices I suspect the little .32acp is going to have a strong recovery. No it is not a .380 or a .38 special. It is better than a .22lr or .22wmr with similar recoil. So I suspect it is popular with the going over the hill crowd.

B .32H&R Mag. Not everything is about "More Power Scotty!" Granted I used to be in that camp, not anymore.

Power and speed are not all. Speed can be counter intuitive when it comes to penetration. Too much speed and the bullet blows up, creates a big wound cavity but only penetrates half as far. And even if it does not blow up it sheds that energy and falls short.
I have a Ruger New Model Single Six in .32H&R mag, have yet to fire a round of H&R mag in it. But it shoots .32sw longs like lasers with virtually no recoil or muzzle blast. Think I'm going to trade that off for a .327? If you think that have I got a bridge to sell you.

C .41 mag I do not own. But from what I have seen here .41 mag owners are extremely loyal to their choice.
Not going anywhere anytime soon. Bigger than .35, smaller than the .45's and .43's. Seems to me it has found a niche.

Did the writer of the article base his findings on factory ammo sold for each caliber?

If he did he could be missing the boat. .32acp, .32H&R and .41mag are all extremely reloadable with cast bullets.

Be like basing an Autopsy on what the dead man has bought at the convenience store.
He could be very much alive and living on stocks of Ramen and Cambell's soups.

If the FBI has stopped using the 40S&W, the it must be good. In fact, my primary carry handgun is a Bersa Thunder 40.
Just a fluff article.

Yeah, my 32 Special's were obsolete 50 years ago, same with the 300 Savage but there is still ammo in production. I have SIG P226 and a S&W M&P 40, both police turn-ins. The 40 is going to be around a long time. I have a some 9's and a bunch of 45's but I like the 40 too. The 45 Colt was going to be eliminated by the 357 and 44 Magnums. The 45-70, is there any reason for it when there is the 300 Mag's and 338's. Now the 45 GAP might not prosper, like 6.5 Rem Mag, just an idea that maybe was not thoroughly researched. Journalists/writers, not so much gun people.

Define obsolete as it pertains to ammo. Is it simply the chambering falling out of common use, or does it require that new guns and ammo for that chambering are either not made at all, or are only made for a very niche market?

In either case, obsolete does not mean useless. All the rounds will still do what they were designed to do for the most part. There might just be something out there that does it better in some way.

That writer is some piece of work. Almost everything he wrote is pure garbage. He counldnt even get James Bonds original gun right. It was a Berreta .25, everyone thats watched Dr No knows that.
That said, I do agree with the GAP going away. The 41 mag or 40S&W?? Not a chance of either going anywhere

I would not miss any of them except for the .40 S&W. I have a few pistols in it. But with all the LEO trade ins that need to be fed, it will not be obsolete in my life time or my son's.

The ad at the top of the page was a device to save 90% on your electric bill. Must be a Fantasy Site.

I read the article and the OP was being kind.

Magazines are in business to sell magazines, not distribute truths. Author is a wanna be Wiley Clapp, who proclaimed often in the 90's that the 44 special was dead.

I stopped paying attention to Field and Stream when they put a mountain bike on the cover. Outdoor life too when the first rock climbing article showed up.

Seriously, the .41 Mag is my favorite do all Magnum in a Blackhawk. 32 H&R is great for target and small game and the 40 cal has lagged as the double stack 9mm with better ammo has showed up but it has less recoil than my 10mm and a bigger hole than the 9mm.

Who needs a 308? The 6.5 Creed is what all the cool guys shoot.
223? You don't have a 224 Valkerie? What are you thinking and that 30-06 won't do anything. In fact it's dangerous to carry around and don't get me started on the obsolete 45-70 and 300 H&H not to mention a 30-30. What have those ever done not to mention those weird foreign mm things like the 6.5 and 7mm Mausers. Pfft..that Mauser guy....

Field and Stream?

How about STREAM and field crossed to get to the stream?

I never got into it, less reason to get excited than ever.
