View Full Version : Starting To Make A Patch Knife

I have an extra replacement pruner blade on hand, which inspired me to make a patch knife.

I think it will do just fine as a patch knife, since it's flat on one side, with an edge bevel on the other.

This is the $3 pruner blade, I started with:

The 1st thing I did was to rough cut it (hacksaw) for a tang:

The 2nd thing was to mark it for grinding into a usable tang:

Then, it was a matter of grinding away the excess material:

I had some fancy Walnut left over from another project, that I'll use for the handle:

I haven't yet decided whether or not to flatten the hump on the blade's spine...…… (to be continued)

1. I'd be concerned if the tang was soft enough to easily cut it with a hacksaw if it would hold an edge.

2. I think I would leave the hump. It kind of gives the blade character, and it won't look like every other patch knife.

Nice looking project.
I made my patch knife out of a broken butcher knife.
After reshaping and grinding in a full Tang I torch heat treated the cutting edge of the blade and quenched it in linseed oil to harden it.
The blade is now a golden straw heat treated color.
I used a section of Elk antler for a handle.
I made a knife sheath that is on the face of my possible a bag under the flap.

My patch knife came out OK.....

I epoxied the scales to the tang in preparation for shaping/sanding/finishing them

I made a temporary leather safety guard for the blade; AND decided to add a brass PRB short-starter to the hilt

With the short-starter integral with the patch knife, it eliminates having to short start the ball with one tool, then switching tools to the patch knife (handy if I'm getting rushed by a Squirrel)

I still have to complete the wood finishing, but it's essentially done.

Your Short Starter is a good idea.
Your knife looks great.
Mine looks like the middle one in your pictures

Is the brass short starter attached to the tang? That is a nice set up! Good job!
Edit! : I just went back and realized that it is not attached to the tang. Is it epoxied in as well?

I drilled hole in the rear of the handle wide enough to accept the brass rod and deep enough for the brass rod to seat against the end of the tang - then epoxied the rod in place.

Cool idea to make the multi-tool knife/starter.

You folks get rushed by squirrels over there in N. E.?

Some people have all the fun!

Looks like it'll be a good knife.

(My older cat would very happily rush any squirrel she spotted, I am guessing she's caught some before I got her, dang they use bad language when treed by her LOL)
