Happy New Year leadheads! I stopped at a radiator shop seeking a cheap source of tin and they gave me a bucket of nasty looking alloy that they said was a lead/tin mix. I melted it down into ingots thinking I had succeeded in scoring a good tin stash. I'm a bit confused though, because the ingots are much harder than I would expect - they're around 14 BHN. Any idea what I've got here? Would a high tin content alloy be this hard?

Thanks for the help Felix and Jetwrench. I'm happy to hear that, since the shop owner said to come back and get the rest if it worked out for me. He must have 300 lbs of it. By the way - whats the relationship between the tin/lead content and the hardness - i.e., how did you identify this? truck

Go back and get the rest of it. The grade of solder that can be used by radiators is regulated. ... felix

my local rad. shop uses 40/60 tin to lead. I got a bout 30 lbs from him once but lately he isn't using much since new radiators made in china cost less then fixing the old ones.

tin has a much higher bhn then lead does.
lead is 5 and iirc tin is in the 50's
