Hi got a mold from a friend and it's a gc mold. I don't happen to have any gc's at the moment, so I was wondering it there ok to shoot without the gc?

In a nutshell,Yes, some barrels are more tolerant than others and will shoot them checkless splendidly Best results wil be found if you keep the vel. in the 22LR range (900-1200 fps) I'm talking rifle boolits BTW

I've found that revolver boolits are more forgiving than rilfe boolits. I've shot lots of 358156 w/o a gas check, but using 3 to 3.5 grs Bullseye in .38s. Results were indistinguishable firing unsupported. However, I've never had any rifle boolits exhibit any satisfaction when missing thier gas checks.

yes, but i would not expect any results that would make you want to keep doing it.

You can also modify a cavity of the mold so it will produce plain base boolits. I know you can do this with aluminum molds. I have done it to two of mine. As far as shooting GC boolits without the GC goes I have had mixed results as far as accuracy goes, but yes you can shoot them without the GC.

My experience must be opposite some of the others. I now question are gas checks worth it? I shoot 22 and 6mm both without the checks and at above 2000 fps.

Do a search on the subject, it's been covered in depth here at least twice in the last 6 months.

I wasted time in putting gaschecks on 1000 rounds.
I can't tell the difference. .38spl. 158gr. swc at 5, 10 and 15 yards.

do it all the time with 4 different bullets and accuracy is excellent at least below 1200 fps

I do it all the time, paper patching.
All my patches are with smokeless powder, in .30, and .303.
I have had fantastic results with starting load data for each caliber.
Using gas checks in the sizing, I get sharp edges, cutting most patches.

At 1200-1300 fps it should not be any different then a 22lr heel boolit with 40:1 or harder with proper boolit fit to the gun.

Good point Doc. That's 75% of ANY cast shooting. Goes double without the GC.
