Just ran 3 batches at 100 yards.

First group:
-38 gr Steel
-x12x gs
-22 (or 25, I forgot) mm fiber wad
-fold crimp
-3” Fiocchi hull

These shot the tightest. I had one flyer, but I knew it was gonna be. Bad crimp. Pen is for reference:

Second group:
-40 grs of Steel
-same as the above except roll crimp

These shot about a 5” group. I would be confident in hunting out to 100 yards with that load:

Third group:
-same as above except 38 grs of Blue Dot. Worst of the day:

Seriously, I’m impressed. I feel these did better with a fold crimp.

BTW, the gun was a Mossberg 835 rifled barrel. Was gonna run these in my 212, but I didn’t.

That’s pretty good at 100 yds. Packs a wallop at both ends I suspect...

Yeah, I'm pretty impressed. I do like big 'ol round balls!

Did you chronograph those loads?

I bet they'd smack a hog good! Those balls are either ACWW or range scrap. I didn't mark them but our range scrap has a lot of cast boolits and seems to come out about the same as ACWW. If you want hard for hogs they will oven heat treat. Probably not required with a ball that large but if you want hard they will harden.

Thanks for posting.

Was this with a rifled barrel ?
Megasupermagnum kindly got me orientated to the last line.... 835 with rifled barrel.

He states it is a Mossberg 835 with a rifled barrel, presumably a cantilever scope mounted barrel.

Those groups are about what I get in my H&R ultra slug hunter. I simply have not been able to beat it. Yes, it leaves quite the mark on whatever you hit with them.

Yep .. last line I breezed right through and the data receiver was none functioning. Thank you !!!

BT same question as for the two ball load...

Did you check pressure of these loads?

I did. Posted it (I thought) when I tested these at 50.

But here you go!

Yes, you probably did but I forgot. I have a short attention span and was looking at 100 yard results.

Those graphs do look familiar now that you mention it! Sorry!

Any thoughts on the pressure for payload/powder charge compared with other slugs? Just wondering if the oversize balls being swaged down might be pushing pressure up some?

While about 0.010" oversize there isn't a lot of lead to swage down compared to a longer cylindrical solid slug that is only say 0.001" to 0.002" over groove diameter. What do you think?

Thanks,
Longbow

My strain gage is epoxied over the chamber area (near the powder/wad section of a load), so you wouldn’t see a difference as it strictly measures chamber pressures.

However, I can put a strain gage anywhere along the barrel to capture sidewall pressure between loads.

BTW, what mold and size were those from? I’m getting one.

wow.... thats what I say. nice group for 100 yards, was there anything wrapped around the ball? ... will be following.

It's a Lyman 0.735" ball mould.

Balls cast from either range scrap or ACWW... most likely range scrap but it comes out about the same hardness. Lots of hard cast boolits in our range scrap.

Oddly, all my Lyman ball moulds cast oversize with "not Lyman #2 alloy".

I've got: 0.662", 0.678", 0.690", 0.715" and 0.735" moulds and I erroneously refer to the balls by mould designation instead of actual cast diameter. All my Lyman RB moulds cast at least 0.003" oversize with WW.
