I am going to work up some "cowboy" 45 Colt loads for use in a Uberti 1858 based on Trail Boss and some of the coated HG 68 SWCs I usually use for 45 ACP. These will be light loads of 5.5 to perhaps 6.5 grains in a big, 8" barrel 1858 that is all steel, so I am guessing that having bullets walk out under recoil isn't much of a worry. I am used to seating revolver rounds to the crimp groove, but of course an HG 68 doesn't have one. Do I just pick a spot on the upper driving band above the lube groove and have at it?

I would just taper crimp like you with a Lyman
454190.

I used to deep seat the bullet, and put a small roll crimp over the front. Always worked great.

When using the cartridge conversions in cap & ball conversions the H&G 68 shoots closer to the fixed sights than using heavier bullets. This is because the cap & ball revolvers are regulated for round balls. My experience has been that standard 25-yard, timed and rapid-fire charges for .45 ACP in the range of 3.5-4.5 grains of Bullseye, TiteGroup, 700-X, Red Dot, 452AA, WST work fine when the bullet is deep-seated in .45 Colt brass so that the shoulder of the front driving band is flush with the case mouth, using a light taper crimp only enough to remove any mouth flare. I would expect that Trail Boss in similar charge weights would give nearly identical results. It is perfectly OK to increase charges up to a full grain in .45 Schofield or .45 Colt brass to get best accuracy.

I use 4.5 grains of Bullseye or 452AA in my Ruger Vaquero.

I've a friend who's shoot a 200gr SWC in .45 Colt over 5.0grs of Clay's for more then 25yrs for Cowboy Shooting.

I load the Lee #68 clone into 45 Colt brass and seat it to do a modest roll crimp over the shoulder. Makes a goofy looking round, but it works. A moderate charge of Green Dot makes a nice range round for the New Vaquero.

I do the same thing with the 454190 and several other .45 bullets with no crimp groove and it works fine./beagle
