Just finished my first ever casting session. I’m Hooked!

Had some heat issues for a short while but overall cast 420 boolits. Heat added some nice wrinkles to the boolits as well as ‘wings’ on some.

Thanks again for all the info here and help along the way! One and all!

Not bad at all. Keep at it, and you will get better.

Good we hooked another one.

I've said it before, but those look a whole lot better than my first few efforts.

Congratulations, now you are no longer stuck with what is available on the shelf.

I acquired some SOWW’s from local shop and bought some Hardball from Rotometals. Mixed one 5.25lbs bar of Hardball with 7lbs SOWW’s. This was about 1% SN and 2.5% SB.

Mk42gunner - Maybe you didn’t have all the ONLINE help like I did, back when you started; just guessing.

The articles here are INVALUABLE! I’ve received so much help and motivation! Thank you all and Tater!

Don't stutter on your pour - wrinkles will go away.

That looks like a good start. Much better than my first attempt! Another time to two and your reject pile will be much smaller.

Popper - Yessir. I’ve learned that the Lee 6 cavity likes to be quick.

Lightman - After I got the heat issue resolved, I just cooled it down a bit with some fresh fish! Hehe. Picked up the pace a bit and recast the rejects. From that point on I was good to go! Hopefully I can remember that next time! HEHE.

My 40 S&W SD 40 loves that bullet with most going into 1.5 inch at 30 meters.

Keep that mold hot that will get rid off wrinkles. If your getting fins or "wings" your mold is not closing all the way might be tin collecting at some spots or you just not holding it close. Wait extra second or two longer before you open your mold and you wont get those craters where sprue plate cuts. Those should be nice and flush.

Again there is nothing wrong with a good ole Lee 6 banger. I use the same mold for my 10mm and it works well. Good job and yes casting is very addicting as you see.

Thanks! I believe you called it correctly. I found myself at the start sometimes holding the sprue cutter handle instead of the other mold handle. Shhhhh! Don’t say anything! Haha. I was guilty as charged for just a few and caught myself. Copy that on the wait a second or two more....I did and most all later on came out smooth. I’ll keep that in mind!

Cast10, you are on your way now, as was previously stated, you are no longer a slave to the bullet manufacturers!!!!! I have that same mold, and it shoots wonderfully in my .40 S&W carry gun! Welcome to the addiction, kinda fun, huh???? Good luck!!!

wait a second how come its okay those bullets have a built in radiused bottom but if I get even a slight radius on a 45 ACP boolit I'm supposed to toss it?

A mold that is designed to cast flat based bullets is not filling out if there is a random radius on the base so it is a different random weight and probably out of balance compared to a properly filled out bullet . Not to mention how it how it might affect the bullet when leaving the muzzle when one portion of the bullet base leaves before the other. Which ever style , bevel or flat base they need to be completely filled out. IMHO :)

Thanks bluebird! I really really really read a lot here before getting started. I had an opportunity to cast with a relative some months back, so kinda had an idea how things came together. I credit CastBoolits for my success!

High Standard - Good to know. I can’t wait to see how they shoot! Getting stuff ready to PC now!
