I have found that shooting my ARs off the bench is an exercise in frustration due to the fact that they don't ride in the rear bag to my satisfaction. Short of spending what I though was an excessive mount of coinage to purchase a suitable stock I didn't see much relief to my frustration. So after a little brainstorming and thinking I came up with a thrifty (Cheap) solution that has worked out pretty well for me. It turned out to be a simple inexpensive solution for my needs.

That is smart. And it should prevent scope cut eyebrows from an AR10- that happened to my buddy when the sandbag pushed the collapse button.....
I'm a minority, but I only use fixed stocks on my AR15s.

Interesting solution. I like A2 stocks on my target rifles.

A2 stock would have worked but I didn't have one on hand and really wanted a bottom that was parallel with barrel for bench shooting anyway

Texas , I will join you in that minority as I prefer fixed stocks on mine , I have some with the adjustable , but the fixed I like more .

Great idea! I did spend too much to buy a flat-bottom butt stock.:violin:

Please explain more. Is that a piece of aluminum tubing? How did you attach it?

What I used was 6061 t-6 aluminum bar stock. Drilled and tapped the end for 1/4-20. I then cut out the rear sling swivel on the stock and squared it up and drilled the butt plate for a clearance hole for said 1/4-20 bolt. The whole operation took less than an hour.
Total cost was maybe $5. Nicest thing to my twisted mind is that no one else at my range has one............Now I realize that having my own small machine shop in retirement is a great help.

Great post & good photos - thanks for sharing. A copy of this should be put in the "Handy Idea Thread" that is in the forum here somewhere.

I found the A2 to slide in the bag in a way that recoil wasn't straight back so got a magpul straight non-adjustable. Works fine an mine. I do not like the collapsible stocks.

Any stock that is tapered to the butt plate on the bottom will raise the muzzle as the rifle moves rearward on the bag.

Why, when class legal, benchrest stocks have no taper on the bottom, similar to what the OP has done, in a simple and effective way.
