I bought a ruger Blackhawk in .30 carbine this weekend. Knowing I had a ton of brass and some 100 grain plinkers, I set to loading up a couple hundred rounds to take to the range today. I soon discovered that these do not load the same as 357 mags or 44 mags. I did not bother to measure the c.o.l. I ended up bringing about 1/3 of them back to pull down and TRIM so that the cylinder will actually TURN!!! I am assuming that is why they would not fit flush with the cylinder. How dumb can I be?[smilie=1:

I still have about 150 45acp that I put 6 grains of Titegroup in. I had filled a 50 cal ammo can within 1 1/2 inches from the top. I just thought I wouldn't have to load 45acps any time soon.

............pumpguy, the Ruger BH in 30 M1 is fairly sensitive to clearances between the cylinder and recoil shield. Watch case trim length and primer seating depth. Also, cast boolit OD's and seating length can play hob. Also I guess it's something built into these pistols as even light target type loads seem to depart with an ear busting shriek.

buckshot is right You will have more problems with Mil brass. I had trouble with PMC too . I never got to where I thought they really shot good " just me" . The sound is like nothing else so you could not hunt with them . Was good bye

Good morning I have only shot these interesting Rugers... I was at Fort Hood 2nd Armored 71-72 and a TC (tank commander) Dan B. from Wanachi Wash. had one. Our armorer had cases of m1 Carbine sitting about and so we had an unlimited ammo supply. Jack rabbits from the turret of a moving tank is an EXCELLENT marksmanship challenge.
God Bless you !

Well, how did the other 2/3 shoot?

Well, it isn't the most accurate gun I have. I was shooting some 100 grain Speer plinkers and some 110 grain military pulls. I used 11.5 grains of 2400 with both bullets. I also took the 10.5" Super Blackhawk I bought a while back. The .30 is about half as accurate as the .44, but, I will work on it and cast up some boolits and see if I can't maybe improve that.

I think most all of have done that at one time or another. After you learn and get your confidence built up you may fall into the trap of over confidence you skip a step thinking it's not needed or that you got things down pat. After I first started and had a few calibers under my belt I built up a couple hundred 45s that wouldn't feed well. I fought with them for awhile and then finally got tired of fighting with them an tore them down. Then like a year latter built up a couple hundred 30 carbine that wouldn't fire because the bullet was an odd shape for that caliber and the bolt wasn't quite close all the way. My thing is it's a ways for me to travel to go shooting and I don't get out as much as I like because of this and I want to break the rule of just building a few for a new test load. If I build only a few and they fire fine, so I'm done and think I should have built more. Hopefully we learn from it.

Has anyone used the 311410 in this gun? Mine cast about 133 grains with straight WWs. This seems a little heavy. Anyone have some load recommendations?

i use a 98 gr rcbs boolit for the 32 cals and i size it to 313 for mine.
with 3.5 grs of 700-x it is pleasant to shoot and quiet also.
oh i also use 32-20 brass trimmed down some.
25-20 brass has rims that are too thick.

One LOUD revolver, for darn sure. If I still had one, I would likely try 32-20 casings in it trimmed to 1.285" or so and sized in the 30 Carbine die. There's just something not quite right with rimless casings in a revolver. Call me "prejudiced".

I'll wager the 327 Federal will be just as loud and obnoxious, since it flings similar-weight bullets at similar velocities.

I used a Blackhawk in .30 Carbine WAY back in the 70's and used the #311410 cast from WW's over 2400. Forget the load but the Lyman manual shows the #311410 at an OCL of 1.680" and Rem 6 1/2 primers with 2400.....start load is 10.5 grs for 1282 fps.....MAX is shown as 12.0 for 1414 fps ( also 12.0 is shown as a compressed load)

DO recall having to watch the OCL to keep it short enough for the cylinder on the Ruger.

The .30 Carbine Blackhawks are ear splitters aren't they?? LOL.

I heard how loud this gun was before I bought it. So far, it hasn't been too bad. The flash, on the other hand is QUITE impressive.
