custom 44 barrel leading

Hello everyone, I have a five and a half inch 44 special bisley custom with a pacnor barrel by David Clements. It shoots 7.5 grains of unique and a 250 grain lead head bullet accurately, however I do get leading just in front of the forcing cone. I talked to David and he said to try matts bullets at bhn 11 and 4227. With the 4227 and that bullet I got no leading but not near as accurate. David said some guns will lead with unique. David also said the gun will not leave the shop without proper dimensions so that is not the problem. The 4227 load was 16 grains, again clean no leading but not near as accurate. I sure would like to use the unique load with no leading or something that shoots just as good with the 250 grain bullet and same performance. Any help would be very much appreciated. I also have 2400 but I dont want much over 1000 fps. Thanks guys

4227 in 44 special seems like an odd recommendation. I can find no load data for that. While I'm sure it can work, even in 44 magnum I don't like that powder until I add enough to be compressed. Did you try unique with the Matt's bullet?

All leading is Custom!

Speer says 12-13 grains of 2400 for 856-965 fps with the RCBS K-250g. 4227 sounds weird to me too, I don't think it burns well at 44 Special pressures. Speer says 6.9g of Unique for 921 fps with that bullet. 7.8 grains of Unique is max load for 250g jackets in the Special.

Powder choice is very far down the list on reasons of Lead fouling.
Boolit Fit is number one.
What size is your 250gr projectile?
How hard is the alloy?
Are you casting your own?
what size is the projectile?
What size are the cylinder throats?

I was just trying to break the ice before questioning "Dave's Dimensions". Slug the barrel with a soft lead ball. See if you feel a tight spot. Measure the cylinder throats. If I built a gun I could tell you the exact size of the throats not that the dimensions were ok.

If the lead knocks off easily, it's abrading. If it's welded on, that's gas cutting.

Leading is still 99% bullet fit.

I am remembering a S&W 625 with similar leading and the only thing we found was the chambers were too big. Went .002" larger with the bullet and it fixed the problem.

I would check bullet to cylinder fit, and maybe go slightly softer for lead.
