I have three 3” 44 special revolvers (S&W 24-3, S&W 696 and Ruger GP100). After shooting the three yesterday and when they were all on my bench together for cleaning, I noticed how long the charge holes in the cylinders were. I took an unfired new 44 magnum case (Starline) and inserted it into the cylinders. To my surprise it almost fit and came only 0.050”-0.055”short of going all the way in. This was the case with all three revolvers and in all the charge holes. I immediately went to the safe and grabbed some 38 special revolvers (S&W 10-5, S&W 60, Ruger GP100 and Service Six both 38SPL) to check with a 357 magnum case. None of this “very long” chamber was observed. So my question is: is this a common thing for 44 special chambers to be cut this way? Did any of you notice this in their 44 special guns?

A fully loaded .44 Magnum will "almost"fit in my .44 Special Blackhawk cylinder. It lacks just a tiny bit of completely seating but the case and the 240 grain SWC does fit.

This has been reported in the past. 1 member had a Ruger that would take a 44 mag, but my own would not. Seems to vary from gun to gun. One of those things that reloaded need to watch for, I guess.

Here is my Flattop with a 44 mag casing protruding.
