Here’s some interesting ballistic pressure data comparing Fiocchi Magnum 616, standard Fiocchi 616, and Federal 209A.

Looks like the Fio Mag 616 are hotter than Fed 209A in this tested data.

Interesting!

A good read here too if you haven't seen it:

A primer change can make quite a difference just between brands! All 209 primers are not created equal!

I think the Lyman shotshell book has a chart showing similar results. Not as detailed re: the loading data but shows the impact of switching primers.

In the early 2000’s, I hunted pheasants in South Dakota. I was usually a poster, and loaded 3” shells with 1 3/4 ounces of #5 nickel plated lead using Longshot powder. The shells with Fed209A primers were great. Then I loaded some factory primed 3” Fiocchi shells (from BPI) and when the temperature dropped below about 35 degrees they were bloopers. That’s the last time I used a Fio 616 primer.

I'm pretty sure the Federal hull has more volume than the Fiochhi. If you stuffed a Fiocchi 616 Mag primer in a Federal hull, the pressures would probably be close.

I sure wish BPI would just get Federal hulls in stock, and make data for those again, instead of trying to push inferior components.

They have had federal hulls in stock several times in the last month. They usually sit there for a few days before they go out of stock. All the other hulls last about an hour at most

They substituted hulls, then blamed the primer?

Not quite. The first and third load listed was exactly the same except for primers. Read the note next to the 3rd load.
