A Canadian friend of a friend has what appears to be a Savage 340 rifle in .222 Remington with no brand name on it. The caliber is stamped on the barrel, as is a proofmark (SP in an oval.) Serial number is 125XXX. I guess it could have been sold as a Savage, Stevens, Springfield, or even a store brand. Any Savage experts out there who can come up with brand name and/or age? Thanks and sorry about the lack of clues.

mine is a.222 Revelation for Sears, so yours could be from ?????????????
With out any markings it will be hard to get the answers you want.
It also could be a rebuild.m all my markings are on the barrel, so if the barrel has been swaped????

When Sear was selling guns under the house name most of them came with a string of number, not Brand names, printed on them somewhere.

Many times these were hidden under the stock. If your freind hasn't pulled the stock have him do so. If he finds a string of numbers such as: 356.0076 he may have thought it was a serial number or patent number.

Numrich catalogs usually have a section set up to decode House "number" put on by places like Sear, Monkey Wards and others. suggest he look for a line of number and check a Numrich catalog.

if i remember correctly the 340-a has a bbl nut just like the newer rifles do.

The nut is also a different size, the 110 wrench will not fit it. I have been told that the threads are different also.
