the big brown truck left a rectangled cardboard box at my place and i got another sporter 1891 argentine mauser in 7.65x53. i still have to shoot the last one!!!!! this one was made by lowe and its g 3XXX. does anybody have the year it was made? (i don't) the 91 argie has its barrel reduced to 21-22" and whoever made it did a good job. the front sight looks like a remington m760 front sight. the rear sight is original. it has a 2 stage trigger that will break at 4-5 lbs.

the stock however, needs a steam cleaning!!!! its dented and dings and scratch and whatever else it went thru. its needs some slings and the cleaning rod hole is not filled in with a dowel. (i have another job....yea!!!!!) i took the bolt out of it and the previous owner knows how to clean!!! i looked into the bore and it was shiny and bright.

all in all, i paid $200 ($150 for the rifle, $17 auction house, $33 for ups) for the rifle and i'm happy that i did.

Congratulations on the "new" antique. I think that they started over every year with the numbers so you really can't tell what year they were made.

Going from memory here, so don't take this as gospel; but I think the letter prefix started at a and changed every 10,000 rifles. Assuming they didn't have a block without the letter prefix, yours should be in the 70,3xxx range.

Not sure if they restarted s/n every year, or every contract.

That's a neat little rifle. I like it.

Great Rifle! Yet another lover of the 91 Argi rifles! What is the barrel like?
I too have a soft spot for these rifles, and bought a work in progress rifle that some one had screwed up at a gun show 3 or 4 years ago. It was a small show, and not many vendors, so it did not take long to looks at everything. One guy had the gun I ended up buying on his table and it did not fit in with the rest of his stuff. Asking price was $100, so I looked and sit it back down, as I could not convince myself that I needed a chopped up bubba gun.
After I looked at everything else, I came back and looked again. Seller would not let me leave with out taking that gun with me. Ended up buying it for $75, and did not know whether to feel guilty for buying a piece of junk, or good about getting a bargain.
The bore was really dirty, and I was not optimistic that it would clean up. I figured I could sell it to the Amish, if nothing else, as they will buy about anything that is cheap and goes bang around here.

When I got it home and cleaned it, I discovered the bore what really pretty good. Sharp rifling and just a bit frosty.
My gun smith buddy gave me a set of 700 Remington sights, and I installed them, then I reshaped the stock just a little and put some finish on it. I cleaned up the end of the barrel where bubba cut it off with a hack saw, and re-crowned it. Later in the year, my cousin hot blued it.
After running some jacketed Military ball ammo through it, and cleaning the snot out of it, the bore looks good.
Its a great shooter, looks pretty good, and NOPE! the Amish are not getting this one.
The NOE 314-299 bullet shoots really well, with 12 grs of Green Dot powder, or 16 grs or 2400. Cases are easy to make from 3006. Its a winner, in my opinion.

the previous owner had left it sharp and shiny. i was amazed at this. usually the rifles forgo anything that resembles oil, but not this one. i still have to it take apart, but so far, there's no problem. i have the lee 312 185 R and i've have casted some up to .313" for my other argie(.311"). i still have slug this rifle.

If that's an example of a stock that needs help, I'd take it ANY day over some that I've had! Years ago I adopted the mantra of buying surplus based on the metal/mechanical condition. Of course that was back when replacement wood was readily available.

Overall it's a very nice old rifle in great shape. Enjoy and get back to us!

I’m glad this is about a happy ending. At first I thought you were going to say they lost something. I bought a sporterized Argentinian rifle thirty years ago, just because a friend needed the money. It was a sweet shooter, but stayed in the back of the closet because I had other guns to shoot. My son has it now. He keeps saying he’s going to buy some ammunition for it one day and shoot it. Unfortunately, he has the same problem as me, too many other guns. Maybe if he runs out of ammunition and it’s the only thing for sale, the gun will see a little action.

Can someone tell me where to buy ammo online for those Argentinians? I might just send my son a box.
