I have one of the cleanest old 336 Marlins, waffle top, no scope mts I have ever encountered. I think it was made about 47,dont quote me on this. The bore is bright an shiny. It has a half magazine, holds 4 rounds with a slender 26" barrel, yep you read that right, 26". It has a very fine silver bead front sight, and a stamped out traditional factory sight, that is zeroed with factory JSP. I tried some Lee 170gr FP, cast with 11 grs of Unique, but with the elevator ran all the way up it was still low. I dug in my stash and found a Williams, micro click that fit the rifles factory drilled holes with filler screws still in them, and guesstimated the height it peep needed to be. First 2 shots at 100ys, were very close together. It was about 4" high, and the same distance to the right. Clicked both over, halved the distance with the next shot, did the same and shot again, dead on l to r, and about 2" high at 100yds. I settled with the ft sight in the bottom of the peep for dead on at 100yds, in the middle at150 and shooting a little low at 200yds with the middle of the peep hold. I can live with 2-3" low at 200yds, well in minute of deer. The factory sights remain zeroed with JSP if I want to use that. I have had this rifle for a long time, It has a crisp, #2 trigger, smooth as glass. The stock has coarse checkering on the walnut, with a palm swell in the pistol grip area. The action runs slick as if on roller bearings. It has factory swivel studs and a leather sling, that when wrapped around my arm, allows me to keep a pop can rolling at 100-150 yds with very few misses. I wonder why we cant build guns that work as smooth and shoot as well today. Oh well, you cant go home again as the saying goes. But you sure can enjoy a good shooting Iron. Just thought I would share.

Would love to see a picture as well. You don't say but guessing this is a 30-30? Different features than the usual for sure. I have a 1952 336 SC in 35 Rem std 20" and short magazine. I posted picture and story on "the last gun you bought" thread. Waffle top was machined off and then d&t'd for scope mounts.

If your serial # starts with a "D" it is a '47.

I'll be forth to request pictures, although I still can't do them myself.

Sounds like your rifle is a 336A, although every one I have read of has a 24" barrel; including my 1950 version in .35 Remington.

Dating a Marlin is fairly easy, there should be a letter prefix to the serial number on yours. C or D for 1947 IIRC.

Since the Model 336 was introduced in 1948, the SN prefix would be an E, F, G, or H (the waffle top went away after 1951)

You don't have to look very hard to find multiple examples of 1952 336 Waffletops including mine ( J prefix) that was machined off to be d&t'd.

Guys pics have been sent to TBG. It is a E prefix in the serial # which is under the loop of the lever. And yes it is a 30/30, and I measured the barrel again, to be sure, and it is 26 1/4" long

Koger, I hope that these came through clear...
What a very nice rifle that you seem to have excluded from our occasional trade talks[emoji848][emoji16]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210321/2f10dfd25cc74dcdefd5e589c1660677.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210321/52b56e3452a31e91660c718976ca8c57.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210321/d05b1ccf6dc9388d9e694ead49acdd52.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210321/d2998c4a1b869e2fa01dc489180ca107.jpg

There is something about the looks of a short magazine long barreled lever action rifle that just says "Perfection."

I always wanted a 336A in 25-35 Winchester. Or any of the cartridges that they came in....

Thanks for the pictures. That is a real nice one there! "E" would make it a 1948 which make more sense as noted in another post.

That is one handsome rifle !! Those old Waffle Tops are fine rifles to have about. I am thinking our's is a 1951.
