Looking for a substitute for A5744. 20-25 grains behind gc 174 grain CB is published. But, in this environment, looking to use powder I have on hand. Looking at burn charts, wondering if anyone has tried imr 4227 for similar loads in the 300 win mag.

Thanks

Do you have access to Lyman Cast Bullet Manual #4?

I use a lot of RE-7 in my 338 WM as an easier-to-find replacement for 5744.

It will depend on what speed you're trying to get to. Some 4227 reduced loads may need/like filler. At higher levels it doesn't seem to be as position sensitive as some other powders.
Shoot me a p.m. and I'll look at my old Lyman manual when I get home.

YMMV

OK, I found an old Lyman book from when I started reloading in the late 60's, and it has loads for 4227. Thanks, I had not thought to go that far back in time.

Also, had not thought of RL-7 as I thought it might be too far from 5744 on the burn chart.

I also have the following powders:
H110
Vhit N110
W-296
IMR4227 and
RL-7

173 or 200 gas checked boolits

We have never regretted having a good assortment of the old reloading manuals...... especially those that deal with lead slugs.

A5744 is hard to beat in the 300 Win Mag. The lowly LEE C309-170F shoots like a house afire in my Ruger M77 MKII with that powder. The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook #4 doesn't list any 300WM loads for IMR 4227, but it does have loads for RL7. Just as a point of reference with a 180 grain Cast Boolit (#311332), the Start load with RL 7 is 27.5 grains and Max is 46. You'll likely find the best accuracy on the lower end of the scale. Hope this helps.

Surprised someone hasn't mentioned Shooters World Buffalo Rifle powder

Thanks all for your help and suggestions.
Hopefully by the end of the year, we can once again find a full range of propellants.

Cheers,

As rockrat has pointed out, truly a wonder no one has mentioned Buffalo Rifle powder. I believe it has been well documented that it is in fact Lovex D060 the very same as the very expensive 5744.
