Assuming normal non-GC velocities, what are/is the downside of of loading/shooting powder coated, gas check based boolits without a gas check? Leading, accuracy or ???

I ask because it seems there is little difference between a bevel based boolit and a GC based boolit.

I tried it and got better accuracy with them installed.

somebody on this excellent forum offered to mill off the top of my mold, converting my LEE 430-310 to a 280gr flat base,

I've loaded (and shot), literally, thousands of lubed Lyman 358156 SWCs at .38 Spl. velocities without gas checks, so I doubt any significant issues should arise using PC'd boolits w/o checks under 1000 fps.

derek45 did the milling make them shoot as good as gas checked ? just curious .

I’ve shot a lot of gas check boolits without gas checks using PC. Mostly in my 45/70 and mostly for plinking. Perhaps there would be a difference if you’re looking for highest precision possible, but otherwise they work fine.

At lower velocities in my rifle (~1000fps) I find without GC lubed shoot ok at 100yd, almost as good as with a GC.

When powder coated I have found they don't shoot well at all, as in 4-6" groups at 100yds. That is unacceptable to me so I install GC when the bullet is designed for them.

But, at pistol ranges I would use a GC only if required to stop leading, lubed or PC.
